- Q:I redid my floor in november using the sticky tiles I purchased from Family Dollar. I wanted to take the tiles off. Is there a easy way to do this without spending lots of money?
- Heating the tiles up will make for easy removal.But you cant just use a standard hair dryer. Rent a commercial heat gun. It ll heat the tile up for easy removal. Most people think a regular dryer will work, it wont. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
- Q:My wife sent me to pick up some used floor tile. It still has the stuff (plaster? grout? whatever?) on the back of the tile. Can this be reused? Do I have to get the old stuff off? It is on there pretty uniformly.
- You could use this again if you want. The biggest thing is the thinset mortar on the backs and grout on the edges. If the mortar on the back is uniform, there's not much problem, but it will add to the overall height of the floor. You will also need to pay attention when re-installing to keep your top surface uniform (flat so that you don't have raised or low corners). As for grout on the sides, it can be removed painstakingly using some ceramic tile nippers. If there's a lot on the surface of the tile, it may be hard to get it cleaned effectively so that all looks good. Bottom line, you can reuse it. However, there could be a lot of labor involved in getting it ready for installing it. Unless it was really special, I'd look for something new - especially if you're going to install it in a large area.
- Q:We are trying to sell our house so I‘m not interested in professionalism...just something that works and looks decent. We have a small full bathroom that has some tile coming off one of the walls. Looking at it, it seems the entire wall of tile is ready to come down. I need to fix this economically and I‘m assuming I need to do the entire wall. Any ideas how I should go about this? Are there large sheets of tile I can just stick up there? - If you have other problems like this in the house I wouldn't do a thing. just lower your asking price. Most of time if you have to ask a question like this you don't have the skill set to properly do the repair. A handy man may save you time and money or you can ask your Realtor for suggestions. If you want what the house is worth you will need to make the house ready to live in. New carpet, all the repairs done, clean appliances, With today's market you may have to make all the repairs yourself and lower the list price.
- Q:a few tiles are cracked near the sink. How can i fix it temporarily ( is it worth it?) or should i replace the tiles or the whole thing? how would i go about doing that?
- see if you can find new tile same color at store, then chip it out, buy some thin set or use liquid nails, then mix up a small amount of grout or buy the liquid squeeze out of a can grout,
- Q:The interior of my shower is all glazed ceramic tile. I have always used Tilex for cleaning with no problem. Recently I used a Lysol Bathroom cleaner and now I haved horrible white streaks down the walls where I sprayed it. How can I get rid of the streaks? Is it the product that made them? - White streaks on the TILE? - or the painted walls. The only thing I can think is that that lysol bathroom cleaner was so powerful that it melted your grout (the stuff between the tiles) Only a very strong acid (murriatic?) would melt your tiles, that is ordinary white glazed (shiny) - try cleaning tiles w/car wax - polish - this will clean and make them shine. If your grout is ok - you can wax that too!
- Q:Hi Folks,Currently I have a bath tub with a vinyl shower surround. I‘m considering removing the shower surround and replacing it with tile.I‘m just wondering how big of a job this is? I‘ve never tiled before but consider myself handy and have done plenty around the house.Of note, I don‘t believe proper backboard is underneath the surround so I‘d have to put that up also. I‘ve put drywall up in the past so I think that part should be ok.So...is this a do it yourself job? Or is this something that needs to be hired out for. Seems like it should be simple, but maybe I‘m missing something and it gets complicated or difficult to make come out nice?Also, how long should this take if I did it myself (days and hours per day) and how long before I can start using the shower again.Thanks!
- You can cut the edge of the tub off and lay the tile right to the top surface of the tub, leave a small gap for grout or caulking. make sure that the backer board is to the edge too. A sawzall will work with a fine blade.You will need to be careful when ya cut though. You can use thin set but there are different grades, use the more expensive one with the polymers in it if you want it to last for decades. You can also fur out the wall half inch or so to make up for the difference at the top of the tub, this will bring the backer board out to where you need it, where it is even with the top of the tub.
- Q:We will be tiling a backsplash directly onto drywall after our countertops are installed. My question is -- what do I do about the electrical outlets in that area? The tile is about 1/4 inch thick -- and I want the outlets even with the tile (right?) After I tile around the outlet openings, then how do you make them flush when you put everything back together? For example, do I just pull the sockets out so that the screw brackets sit on top of the tile? If so, then do I need to drill screw holes through the tile? If so, then how do I make sure that the tile does not break or crack?
- when you take the cover off there is that metal part the switch or the plug is on and there is little ears like that has a screw on the bottom and on top so you're going to unscrew those screws and you're tile should be cut to fit behind those ears you would need longer screws i use course Sheetrock screws when i do this 11/2 should work and when cut the tile around the plug just make sure you don't cover the hole where the screw would go in to that's all it'll be easy when you get the hang of it tile and flooring expert

- Q:I am tiling a bathroom, and have found a deal on 4 tiles. However, I am no expert when it comes to calculating, and am having difficulty determining how many tiles I should buy. I don‘t want to buy much too many, or even much worse, not buy enough.I am planning to do 3 different areas in the bathroom. I have included the measurements, in inches, of each area. Can you help me out?
- 35/4 = 8.75 Since you really can't buy 0.75 tiles, round it up 9 80/4 = 20 72/4 = 18 9 * 20 + 9 * 20 + 18 * 20 => 180 + 180 + 360 => 720 38/4 = 9.5 => 10 39/4 = 9.75 => 10 22/4 = 5.5 => 6 21/4 = 5.25 => 6 10 * 10 + 6 * 10 + 6 * 10 => 100 + 60 + 60 => 220 79/4 = 19.75 => 20 27/4 = 6.75 => 7 20 * 7 = 140 720 + 220 + 140 => 840 + 140 => 980 At the minimum, you'll need to buy around 980 tiles.
