Q:i need a new catalytic converter but the mechanic said it would cost between $500 to $800 and i was just wondering if it would be cheaper to replace the whole exhaust system instead.
The catalytic converter is by far the most costly component in your exhaust system. Replacing your entire exhaust system wouldn't do you much good as long as your present exhaust system (less cat) is serviceable. It's not an either or situation. You need a replacement cat. Nothing else will work.
Q:Want a custom exhaust system for my 2000 durango any ideas? I want a nice solid sound but not obnoxiously loud any better brands than others? looking to spend about 300 to 500 dollars. anyone own a durango or heard one with a custom exhaust if so does it sounds good sounds good?
For that price and maybe a little less you can go to your local muffler shop, tell them you want a 2.5 cat back pipe with a dynomax muffler. or for around the price you are talking about you can buy a kit with a flow master muffler and install it yourself. and last if you want to spend bucks on a stainless kit you can look up gibson exhaust and get one and install it yourself too. Up to you
Q:Touareg exhaust system failure can continue to drive it
Or can walk, long-term can not go, or go to SSSS check repair it
Q:I just bought a customized Boxster with a Custom Maxflo Dual Exhaust System. I love the roar of this system but my girlfriend says it‘s a little too loud at times. Is it possible to dial down the volume or do I give her an ultimatum? If it‘s possible, how much would it cost to do so?
I don't know, but the older one seemed to be more efficient!!
Q:Looking at getting a new motorcycle and looking at the custom exhaust systems but i‘m not a metal worker so I don‘t know the difference between Carbon Fiber, Stainless Steel and Aluminium. Which is the better metal, what will last longer, what will break easy, what is cheaper to replace, how does it react to hot and cold weather, can it handle expansion to heat and shrinkage to cold, What is the lighter exhaust etc. I‘m not sure on all of the specifications of the metals I could just google it but I‘d rather hear it from someone with experience with these metals and exhausts. If I have missed anything MENTION IT!
Carbon fibre isn't a metal. It's a composite fibre. It's extremely light but incredibly strong. It's pretty much impervious to corrosion but tends to shatter if you drop the bike. It can't readily be repaired. It's horribly expensive. Stainless steel is steel alloyed with chromium. It's a good material, for exhausts. Reasonably priced. That gives it great corrosion resistance and heat resistance but it's heavy. It lasts forever near enough, and can be polished. It can discolour a bit with exhaust heat but it's cosmetic only. Aluminium is a light metal but not as light as carbon fibre. It's relatively corrosion proof but needs looking after more than the others unless it's anodised ( a hard oxide coating applied chemically to the surface which can be coloured. Unlike carbon which is black and s/steel which is self coloured) cost is similar to stainless steel. Carbon and aluminium are usually only used to make the silencer/muffler. They're no good for headers or down pipes. Aluminium would get too hot and melt, carbon would be unable to cope with the movement Of the engine in the chassis. The rest of the exhaust system would be stainless steel, titanium or chrome plated or black painted mild steel.
Q:really, what are the main differences and why is one better than the other? Which will gain more power, and have a better exhaust note? I have a 2000 toyota Celica gt if it helps
You will learn as you do more. Most of your tests are usually done with the sst (tiger top) but of course not all. also most labs have a system either on their reqs or if they are computerized it will print out exactly what tube is used for what test. good luck it is a great job. I love it!
Q:I have a 2005 mazda 3 S. I was gonna put a glasspack on but I‘m being told it‘s rediculously loud. My friend has a whole exhaust system and I think it sounds cool, but I don‘t have a ton of money to blow. I‘m thinking maybe under 300? Recommendations?
To get a deep agressive tone is not easy, particularly from a low cc 4 cylinder car. I got a cat-back exhaust system pretty cheap (440 AUD) fully fitted for my mitsubshi 6 cyclinder (which contains 2 1/4 piping plus a sports muffler). Sounds great. A little bit of research will tell you whether the 3 has 1 or 2 cat's. I would think it only has 1, but Im not sure. Even then, I dont see how it will make much of a difference if the cats are linked in a serial fashion (as in the gas goes into Cat 1, then Cat 2, then the muffler then out). Go Ebay only if its a trusted source and you can fit the thing yourself (you'll need welding equipment and good knowledge of how to do it). I would ring up a few places and ask them if they have put a cat-back system on a 3 before. Only if they have will they be able to tell you the ins and outs of doing it.
Q:I was thinking about cutting my exhaust right before the muffler and running a straight pipe. Can I do that?
No you can't because you need a muffler. But try this if you know how to weld 1) cut the muffler off the system 2) open the muffler and remove the inner workings 3) weld it back together 4) put if back on the car with the hole on top (for it not to be seen) 5) you now have straight pipe with mufflers (legally) ENJOY
Q:I recently bought a ses injen complete exhaust system for my v4 mit eclipse but, when,i received the package,it said it was for v6 eclipses, i was wondering if it could work on my 2.4 v4 sohc, please help me i hope i didnt spend 800 for nothing!!! What do i need to install it (additional material) or idk
Need to put a non-metal connector coupling between the joints to stop electrical charges from eating the metal away.
Q:Do I need to treat my exhaust system before installing it?
The basic exhaust system is just mild steel and the paint will normally come off and the exhaust rot within a few years or so, especially if you drive in a salty area. Better and more expensive exhausts are made of stainless steel and usually outlast the car. You pays your money and takes your choice. If yours has actually broken rather than rusted through I'd suspect either a faulty weld or improper hanging.
