First spray the area with a weed killer, anything that contains glyphosate is good (round up basically). Get a quality weed fabric, newspaper NOT being quality. You can usually find 3 year, 5 year, and sometimes 20 year or life time weed barrier, get the best you can, this will save you time and money in the long run. You can lay the fabric over the sprayed area right away or wait until the grass has died, either way the chemicals will take care of it, but it is easier to wait until the grass has wilted. place a good 2 of rubber mulch over the fabric, and apply a pre-emergent to the area. A common product is Preen but there are better products out there. Apply preen in the spring and again mid summer every year. Doing that, you will be very weed free.
