- Take a metallic bolt, and wind many turns of insulated copper wire around it, and connect one end of the wire to a battery, the other end to the other terminal of the battery through a switch. Now, whenever you press the switch, the bolt gets magnetised, and thus works as a crane (u can use it to lift small pins etc.) When you want to drop the pin, release the switch, the bolt gets demagnetised, and voila!

- Uh, depends on if you're using ASD or LRFD load cases out of ASCE 7-05. I also think IBC 2006 sometimes changes the fine print and also offers their own load cases for ASD and LRFD. A starting point (LRFD case 5 ASCE 7-05) might be 1.2D+1.0E+ L, and for ASD - case 6 - D + 0.75(0.7E) + 0.75L.

- I don't remember ever doing a problem like this, but I will try to solve it. P = W/Δt, P = Fd/Δt P = Fv Force required to lift the 142 kg object; F = 142 * 9.8 F = 1391.6 N Therefore; P = Fv 500 = 1391.6*v v = 0.359 m/s So velocity of the crane is 0.359 m/s. Is that right?

- The only effective way to estimate the size of a crane when needed is to know, without a doubt the weight of the heaviest thing that you have to lift, and allow at least a 20% margin for safety. This is standard practice in building bridges, in particular - the weight of EVERYTHING is clearly marked, or just generally known. If there are bridge segments to load on a barge, for example and the heaviest segments are 220 tons, then a 300 ton crane is used. Always err on the side of safety.
