Q:There is a white ceramic tile floor with white grout in my bathroom. Some of the mastic (I think it was a combination mastic and grout, that could be used either way) is on top of the tile and dried on. Is there any way I can get it off there other than trying to chip at it and possibly ruin the tile?: You need to clean off all the mastic from the wall and the soap dish and use thinset. The mastic will not dry in the shower. After you get it back on avoid getting it wet for a couple days.

Q:I have never tiled before. I have a 3 x3 ft entrance in my house. I would like to remove the old tile and re tile it. How long should this take? and can I just tile over the old tile or does it have to be removed? but mostly how long should it take me to do?: Sorry, I even have in no way heard of a spacing gadget. I in many circumstances basically use the little plastic spacers which you insert between each and each tile. I even have seen some people take an prolonged board and format marks on the board on the suitable spacing.

Q:We laid tile in our Master bath about a month and a half ago. Now we have 2 tiles that are crackd. I would like to no what caused it. We have a slab foundation.: the slab may have cracked under the tiles the proper coverage of thinset may not have been used under the tiles too little of a thinset notch or using too stiff of a thinset may have contributed to fix the two tiles, use a grout scraper (available at a hardware store) and scrape the grout out around the offending tiles, use a hammer and chisel, or screwdriver and pop out the cracked tiles, scrape the thinset off the concrete slab, if any, and set two uncracked tiles in their place. make sure when you make up your thinset that you make it up a nice consistency between runny and stiff. it should be thick and sticky like peanut butter. grout the tiles.

Please only serious replies, no jokesters: If your husband is concerned because of the cuts, it ll depend a lot on what type of tile your working with.. A soft bodied tile that is self spacing. The kind that has little lugs on them and fit together fairly tight, these are easy to do.A little more challenging if they require a spacer. If you use a mastic, the tiles will stay pretty much in place when you set them and then place a small spacer in the joint. Q:How difficult is it to strip and reseal saltillo tile floors? Is this something that I can do myself or do I need to hire a professional?: You don't say why you need to strip and reseal. Is it because of general wear and tear stains? Food stains? grease?Before you invest any time/money in it, try this: Get a Vapor Steam Cleaner!!! I have saltillo tiles in 40% of my house and was looking at stripping and resealing. I laid the tile in the first place and I knew it was going to be work to strip and reseal, then I started reading about Vapor Steam cleaners. They are very popular in Europe (homes tend to have more tile than floor carpeting) and are amazing. Basically they are machines (they look like canister vacuums) that heat plain old water to about 300 degrees, with a pressure gauge up to 65 psi. They come with a lot of attachments, including a nozzle that I used on the grout that has made my tile floors look like they were just put in. You never have to use any cleaner other than water ever again. Best thing is you can use this to clean EVERYTHING! Your oven, your bathtub, your windows, your countertops. It is far more reasonable than stripping/resealing. I got mine from a company in Jupiter Florida called Vapor Steam Products. The model I have is the TR5. For a little over $400 you will have a vapor steam cleaner that you can use throughout your house. The first time I used it on the tile I saw a huge difference. The second time, it was like they were brand new. Then you can just put on a product like Armstrong Tile polish which will make them glossy. You can also use these on area carpets and mattresses and they are the only thing that will KILL dustmites - though they are not vacuum cleaners. And just a word of advice, I did a lot of research and Hoovers and Bissel have very low-end versions of these, and trust me they don't even come close. All of my friends thought I had my tiles stripped and resealed and now they're all going out and getting these. Try this, and save your back and your bank account. Good luck.

Q:we are constructing apartment....got a question about tile work..which is better, is it better to leave some gaps between tiles and is it better layout tiles with no gaps between them...the builder is suggesting the first option above...i prefer the second option...because with the first option, i feel there are chances of dirt getting clogged as time passess by...please advise: The TYPE, size and style of tile determines the size of gap and the type of grout used. Sanded or unsanded. A general rule of thumb, and this is a general rule, 4x4 and most white (white not off white/tan) bodied tile takes almost no gap and tiles are self spacing and use an unsanded grout. Any thing larger and has a red/ tan /grayish or darker body takes a sanded grout and a space as small as 1/8 and no smaller and up to 1/2 grout size. Sealing all grout properly ( easy job) will help a lot in the staining of the grout. There is no choice , the proper gap and type of grout must be used or the grout can fail.
