Q:I have a bunch of bottle caps and I thought it might be cool to encase them in some type of clear material so I could use them for tiles in my shower. Is it even possible to do that?
If you have a tile size , sure make the mold just a hair smaller than the tile. Same if your just replacing a few and making the bottle cap tile as a deco tile. Just use a white thin set and completely smooth coat over the back so you see a all white back ground through your deco.. The use of a extra modified thin set is required because this wouldn t be much different than setting glass tiles. GL
Q:Earlier I asked, How to find a good tile? This is what I meant
Using large tiles are better than the 5 x 5 tiles (old fashioned). Tiles can be marbles or travertine or granite looks more elegant. Normally it sells by 5 - 8 dollars per sq. foot and the labor normally goes the same amount. beware of some contractors that will charge double for the labor meaning... example... 8 dollars per sq foot and they will charge you 16 dollars per sq foot (labor).
Q:can you paint over bathroom tiles? if so what kind do i need?
Yes, there is tile/ceramic paint- several brands- all stocked by home improvement stores. The key element is the prepping. The old tiles and grouting need to be clean -and then cleaned again with the manufacturers suggested cleaner. You can decorate tiles, or change the color of the entire wall. Once the paint is dry, it is waterproof . It takes a bit of time, but with care, you should be able to do almost all the cleaning prep the day before and then just do the final cleaning and paint on the project day. Worst case, do one wall at time. It does not hurt to practice the entire process on one tile- preferably the tile hardest to see when you are on the outside looking in.
Q:I‘m remodeling my kitchen back splash and bathroom shower and i love the Moroccan tiles. Does anyone know any source for Moroccan tiles in San Francisco, California?
The okorder / Cheers, and Good luck Anna,
Q:what causes lippage on a granite floor? i had someone install granite tiles in my bedroom and the lippage isn‘t too bad i must say but 2 or 3 tiles do have A LOT of lippage...was wondering why that would be? thanks so much in advance!
They were not set properly. Added thin set some times it needed or the peice that is high may not have been set down into the thin set properly. Some times they are not milled properly and are slightly curved. Several factors , all of which a good installer is aware of should have watched for. . If they are to high call them back and have it fixed. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q:There are 5 red tiles, 4 blue tiles 3 green tiles. whats the probablitiy of reaching into the bag and getting a blue tile and then, without replacing that tile, reaching into the bag again and getting a red tile?
there are 12 tiles altogether probability of getting blue tile first is 4/12 but then there will be only 11 tiles so there is a probability of getting a red tile second is 4/11 so, 4/12 times by 4/11 which equals 4/33
Q:We just bought a house and the bathroom tile looks terrible. Its not in bad shape, I just dont like the ugly floral pattern. Since we had to spend a lot of money on other projects in the house we dont have a lot to spend on re-tiling, The bathroom is small, about 5ftx4ft of floor, so I thought peelstick would be a good option. The tiles currently on the floor are peel and stick, should I remove them all before I apply the new ones? or can I just give them a good cleaning and lay the new tiles over them?
If the old tiles are not embossed, you can put down new peel n stick with no need to remove the old ones. If they are embossed, you might want to sand the pattern down or pour on a leveler. And I've had peel n stick in both bathrooms for almost 20 years, and they still look as good as new. They were installed over asphalt tiles.
Q:I am installing tile in a bathroom, hall, dinining room, and kitchen, and they all connect. Where should I center the tiles?
By ALL CONNECT, do you mean any visible straight line of any length through more than one room? Certainly in multiple places you'll have to measure, square the areas and snap two perpendicular lines. Obvious choices in measuring will be issues such as how many full pieces will be most visible, in an aesthetic sense, then tranistion, in full pieces where possible in the room connections. Included in the measuring and snapping lines, you should also consider cuts and trying to create same size pieces where possible at opposing walls. You should consider that in 1/4 grout lines you'll add an inch of tile space on the floor for every 1 ft. of tile,,, be it a 12 inch piece, 16 or 18. So you'd have to do the math, deciding to center a middle tile, or spacing for even wall cuts. I often lay out a course or two and check to perhaps shift my center lines, for the cuts.
Q:Hello. The office we work in has what we believe to be vinyl tiles, 12x12, with a white powdery substance that is always on the floor. It looks as though the tile has never been sealed before so I‘m not sure if this is the cause. I have read online about efflorescence. Could this be that? I‘m really nervous because I don‘t know if it is asbestos. There are a few people in this area, and our chairs are constantly rolling around on the floor. I would say that the floor is just worn down because of the high traffic but I just wanted opinions on what it could be. This powder gets on the bottom of our chairs and our shoes. Any help is appreciated!
first do not to panic 12x12s are not asbestos second yes seal and wax the tiles
Q:I am completely re-doing one of the bathrooms in my home and I would like to put in a stand alone tile shower. Can someone tell me what the best material to use for it would be? Ceramic, porcelin, slate, travertine, marble?? Are any better for walls/floors/wet areas than others?
The tile isn't as important as what the tiles are mounted to. Make sure you use material specific for wet areas. as for which one to use, it would depend on which one you like, and can afford. I like the looks of bigger tiles, but would much rather install smaller tiles. Bigger tiles can be a pain when it comes to making difficult cuts.
