- From a design perspective, it depends on the application. Porcelain tiles have the color permeated throughout the tile. That means, for example, if you use them say around a bathtub deck as a back splash the side of the tile that is exposed will have the same design on the front. With ceramic tile, it will have the color of the clay which means you have to use a finish tile or edge tile to conceal that because it does not look nice. Because the pattern goes all of the way through a porcelain tile, some people feel it gives a more realistic replica of certain stones than ceramic does. And, there are claims that porcelain tiles are more durable than ceramic.

- Some tiles are rated for indoor or outdoor use. Others aren't. Check with the place you bought them from to find out. If not, they will rot and deterioriate quickly.

- One thing to consider when selecting grout for light colored tiles - try to avoid grout colors that are white, or close to white. These light colored shades are also difficult to keep clean for obvious reasons. As an alternative to matching light colored tiles, consider such grout colors as light browns, tans, or shades of gray. In addition to being less difficult to clean, these colors are lass prone to discoloration or yellowing over the lifetime of the tile and grout. Whatever you do, when selecting tile grout, just keep these couple of simple things in mind. Color can have a big impact of the cleanability of a grout. - Q:I believe the tiles were made in Mexico. They are light beige in color. They were installed in the master bathroom which has a shower stall, no bathtub.
- Pretty much agree w/ Doc .. You wont hurt a thing w/ the seal part on the grout,it s not a cure all but it will help.. Get a Penetrating sealer and not a silicone sealer( which will wear off over time} A 2 coat minimum is the way to go.. GL
- Q:hi i live in a upstairs flat,and i want to tile my hall with ceramic tiles,i did a square 4 foot patch to see if the tile would stick or would come loose,well they did come loose,so how do i prepare floorboards for tiling over so the grout wont crack when i walk on the floor thanks
- First, I'd recommend making sure that the wood flooring is secure with no loose spots. Then you may need to strip any finish off it in insure good adhesion. Finally, you'll need to make sure you have a good tile cement and use a proper tile trowel to apply the cement. It will put grooves in the cement that will help with adhesion. If you go to Home Depot or Lowes, they can probably give you pointers. They also have classes sometimes, including putting down tile. Good luck.
- Q:I am planning on laying down tile in my dining room and kitchen. I recently saw an offset pattern with 12x12 tiles and liked it. I‘ve now decided to go with the same offset pattern but with 20x20 ceramic tiles. Would I still have to find the center of the room and start tiling out from the center or can I just start at one wall and go from there since i‘ll be using the offset pattern? Thanks in advance.
- Starting at the center is the only way, regardless if the tile is in line or offset as you plan. Especially with the 20x20. it would look odd to have a 2 tile on one side and an 18 tile on the other. Remember, there is a vertical plain as well as a horizontal plain. Your pattern, with two rows and spacers should be layed out wall to wall up down as well as right and left. That is an easy way to determine your first and second tiles. Mark those two tiles with a magic marker. A rough starting point is determined by measuring the length of the room, convert to inches then divide by 20. This gives you the number of tiles aprox.,divide this number by two (2) and set the first tile at aprox 1/2 the distance from the wall
- Q:I am completely re-doing one of the bathrooms in my home and I would like to put in a stand alone tile shower. Can someone tell me what the best material to use for it would be? Ceramic, porcelin, slate, travertine, marble?? Are any better for walls/floors/wet areas than others?
- The tile isn't as important as what the tiles are mounted to. Make sure you use material specific for wet areas. as for which one to use, it would depend on which one you like, and can afford. I like the looks of bigger tiles, but would much rather install smaller tiles. Bigger tiles can be a pain when it comes to making difficult cuts.
