- How long do you need the light to run at one time? You need enough battery to keep the light going at least that long, and probably 20% more than that. It is a fact of life that good batteries with enough capacity to keep you running for any amount of time cost a lot of money. There a dozens of choices, most of which can be bought with either sort of connector. Connector choices are cigarette lighter and phantom power if this is your only device that needs such a connector, the cigarette lighter type is as good as anything else. If you have other devices that need power, it makes sense to use one connector type between them. Having some lighter socket and some XLR just makes things more difficult.

- Battery voltages are not constant. The rating you see on the side is a nominal value which is in the range expected for the battery. The 3.6 NiMh battery pack output about might be from 2.8v to 3.6v . Alkalines are rated at 1.5v however if you check a new one, you will see that they actually output 1.6-1.7 when new. If your motor was designed to run in a 3.6 volt NiMh battery pack, the intended voltage for the motor might be in the range of 2.5v to 3.6v. They would want the motor to continue to operate as the pack discharges. When you connected the 4.5v to 5.1v battery pack to the you nearly doubled the voltage and current flow. This allowed the motor to pull a bunch of current from the batteries and heat them up. The heat increased the voltage of the batteries and caused them to put out more current and more heat.

- They Pull from both batteries. One battery is said to let you shoot 1800 shots if you are not using a VR lens. I would guess that using a AFS lens would make a difference too. In real life I have been told by many ppl that it is much less than 1800 per battery more around 1200 to 1500. So that being said I would guess around 3000 shots with a MB-D200. If you dont spend a long time reviewing your photos I think your batteries will last longer than your memory. (for 3000 shot you have have to have alot of cards)
