Q:Hiya, I just had a scaffold piercing on the 14th of this month.. and everything was fine but in the last couple of days my ear has become a bit swollen and has broke out into spots. The actual piercing is fine, I found some dry blood on the end of the piercing but I dismissed that as nothing. The piercing doesn't hurt at all but its the itching that's getting to me! :(Any advice please, (bear in mind i shall be going to the doctors)Thanks

You shouldn't need to see the doctor. You may be having a reaction to the jewelry. Doctors are not very knowledgeable about piercings. In fact, most that I've met are quite biased against them. Swelling with a scaffold piercing is normal. Sometimes it takes a few days to take effect. Go to your piercer and let them take a look at it first. If you're wearing surgical steel you may need titanium. Also make sure you're only using sea salt soaks twice a day to keep it clean. No antiseptic cleaners, witch hazel, alcohol, peroxide, antibiotic ointment, most soaps, etc.

Are you sure you didn't mean to say Scaphoid Fracture. The scaphoid process is a projection coming from your Scapula(shoulder Blade), that connects with the clavicle( )and humerus(arm). Hope this helps thanks.

Q:I've had my scaffold piercing for nearly a year now, and on the bottom hole i have a sore red lump on the outside (back of) my ear not in the fold but the back? if you get me?? But its SO sore and its quite red, and i was wondering whether i should pop it? do whatever to it? I've had it for a while now and it does flare up red and painful but then it stops hurting, but it getting on my nerves now and i dunno what to do with it??Thanks :)xx

Sea salt soaks are your best friend. Try them, twice a day on your lump, it usually goes away after a week with this. If it doesn't, then I would go to the piercer and ask them about it, tell them to have a look, maybe they know something more. But try the soaks first.

Q:I'm 15 atm, I want either an industrial piercing now or a scaffold piercing that I can connect later. I may be getting a scaffold piercing instead, seeing as school regulations here probably won't allow a full industrial. It might just be a phase but I've wanted one for a while, and if I don't like it I can always just keep the scaffold piercing if I decide to get that.What I'm wondering is: Are there any people who have an industrial? does it annoy you? does it get infected easily? and how long did it take to fully heal?I'd appreciate all answers, even if you only know someone with one. Very RARELY do piercings actually get infected. There's a host of different irritations and mishaps that can happen to your piercing that will cause redness and swelling and weeping, but they're not really infections. Keeping your piercing clean, and not wearing tight hats, headbands, or helmets, sleeping on your piercing, and just generally babying your piercing will keep it happy and devoid of irritation. As for being annoying, mine is fine, now, but it was kind of a pain when I first got it done. Granted, I got 10 gauge holes punched out of my ear, so my healing was a BIT more involved, but the typical timeframe for a cartilage piercing to heal is at least 6 months. I also got pierced on the side I sleep on, but getting one of those travel pillows works great for sleeping with healing cartilage piercings. Good luck!

It is probably hypotrophic scarring. Cartilage piercings, especially all types of industrials, are prone to this type of scar. Hypotrophic scarring is a bump surrounding the exit hole, the same color as your skin. It may feel hard, but often are not painful. They are usually caused by jewelry putting pressure on the piercing, and the body responds by scarring. Hypotrophic scarring is often due to pressure on a piercing. Changing your jewelry is usually the best move. If the scar is around a ring or other curved jewelry, switch to something straight, like a barbell. If it's on an industrial, put individual jewelry in each piercing. Consult your piercer for jewelry changes in unhealed piercings. Time and oil massages often improve scarring. If hypotrophic scars don't improve after some time, steroid injections and certain topical creams may help. Consult a doctor to see if this is an option.

Q:im quite high up so would have to do the job internally (from the inside..avoiding climbing on roof). it seems that a material (looks like cement?) was used on this old roof (on the inside) and some of this has washed away as i can see daylight where the rain water is leaking through. there's also no black felt evident

You cannot repair any roof from the inside. Whoever did that internal patch was a hack.

Q:I had my scaffolding piercing done on tuesday (now sunday) and it is still really painful and sore. But my main concern is that the skin under the bar looks like it's being pushed down and the skin is growing around the bar? Is this bad?

Yes it is bad if I looks as if it has the skin growing around it. I would see your piercer about that.
