Q:Solar Energy Panels, a good idea?
The panels are relatively easy to install. The batteries and the inverter tend to be heavy and you will need many people or mechanical assistance. You are talking about high current DC thus if you touch the wrong wires it's CC (Cancel Christmas - Rescue Squad Term). You also also dealing with lead acid batteries so they need to be well ventilated or we have another CC situation. Should you have a short, the batteries will overheat and explode projecting sulfuric acid... And the best part is when all is said and done, you are only paying twice to three times the cost for the electric over the life of the system as compared to buying the electric from the power company.

Hard to say. Solar panels are becoming more common these days. May want to ask if the vendor is licensed and bonded contractor (if he's doing installation as well as panel sales). Find out the name of the equipment that this guy is selling (panels and other hardware) and do a search. For that matter, get the guys name and do a search on it to see he pops up elsewhere.
Q:Generator for solar panels....?
Usually, a generator is more cost effective than a battery backup system for your solar panels. Most grid-tied solar arrays are connected to the grid without batteries. My company has installed well over 00 solar arrays for residential and commercial clients and almost none of them had battery systems with them. Many clients asked to see the costs and after that, they agreed that a generator seems better, especially if there is access to fuel readily available. Also, unless there is a battery system, the solar inverters will not operate when the electricity goes out. This is a safety feature, but it keeps you from using any power at all from the panels when the grid goes down. This explains the utility interactive solar inverters compared to the stand alone generators.
Q:How tangible do horseshoe solar panels sound?

Q:QUestion about portable Solar Panels.. Mine is 2v?
Your portable panel is at most a few amps at 2 volts nominal.Hopefully you have a higher voltage than this to enable you to charge a 2 volt battery. This takes about 3.3-3.6 volts. Your converter will function until a battery reaches about 0.5 volts (drop out voltages vary greatly). A deep discharge marine batttery will be the best bet for storage but usually more expensive than a regular battery. If your resources are limited, you might try from these cheaper sources. Insterstate battery stores usually have blems at a lower price. These are totally functional batteries but have surface imperfections that the manufacturer doesn't want his name on. Also check you local junkyard or towing service. They are often asked by insurance carriers to junk a car which has been wrecked. Many times the batteries are still perfect. They sell these for what they can get for them. Look for one from a SUV with lots of power options. Often kids cars have outlandish stereo systems requiring heaavy current batteries. These are a good find. Consider getting a solar power management system for charging your system. It will limit your charging voltage so you do not float a 2 volt battery above 4 volts where it would slowly destroy it.
Q:Why did the voltage of a solar panel drop significantly after putting it through a step down voltage regulator?
you cannot treat the open circuit voltage of a solar panel like a voltage source (like a battery.) the load response of the panel doesn't behave that way. small panels and panels that are producing less than about .5A are very happy to have their output voltage pulled down to whatever they're connected to (typically zero.) I observed the same phenomenon when i connected a 2V 725mA panel to a 2V 325mA fan -- the open circuit voltage of 5V dropped to 3V when connected to the fan, and returned to 5V when disconnected. The easiest workaround is to use 2V of rechargable batteries in parallel with the panel so that the battery holds the 2V potential difference and the panel just supplies the current. any excess current charges the batteries, so you might consider whether or not you need some type of charge controller to prevent burning the batteries via overcharging. there are actually very few applications of solar panels connected directly to circuits that i have seen that have any kind of robust performance -- if they work at all, they eventually die/burn themselves out in a couple of months. the best robust designs always have a rechargable battery and charge controller somewhere in the power circuitry to buffer the load circuit from the panel. .
