Q:Hi, I am starting to get curious about the pros/cons of installing solar panels - has anyone done it and is it worth it?
Solar is mroe expensive than just about every other form of generation for a centralized plant, but can still be cost-effective for a consumer living in the right place. This is because while a coal-fired plant may produce electricity for 2-3 cents per kWh, by the time it's marked up to retail, distributed, and taxed to get to a residence, it may be 5 cents per kWh - a figure which solar can match in many places.
Q:im trying to experiment with solar panels. so i dont want to buy a huge expensive solar panel if i dont need one.
They are powered from internal batteries, so what you really want to do is to charge the batteries. Take them one at a time, as they have different power and voltage requirements. Don't try to do them both together, unless you use an inverter. To directly charge a battery from a solar panel, you need to find out the voltage and current requirements for the charge operation. Then find a solar panel with a voltage somewhat higher. the current can be lower, it will just take longer for the charge. You will have to monitor manually the state of charge of the battery(s) to avoid overcharging and damage. Another alternative is to get a solar panel that will supply 2 volts and use that to operate an inverter that will output 20 VAC with AC sockets on it. then you can plug in the battery chargers that you have, and they will handle the batteries correctly. Or you can buy solar panels with built in circuitry to handle the charge control. .
Q:Can solar panels be installed on metal roofs?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on metal roofs. In fact, metal roofs are considered to be one of the best types of roofs for solar panel installation due to their durability, longevity, and ease of installation. The metal roof provides a stable and secure base for mounting the panels, ensuring optimal energy production. Additionally, the smooth surface of metal roofs allows for efficient panel placement, maximizing sunlight absorption.
Q:wondering if i should get them?? not sure if its worth leasing? also anyone know anything about solar city?
I have panels and they were very much a good investment for me. I should break even in my 6th or 7th year at the latest and they should last at least 20. There were somethings that made it a good investment. My system cost $26K, I got a $0K rebate from my utility and a $2K fed tax credit (it's up to $7800 for this size system now). I also live in a sunny location and have a south facing roof. Plus I plan on living in my house till I die. If you really want to know if it makes good financial sense then get a no obligation quote from a reliable installation company. They will be able to recommend a system that will suit your needs, know about any rebates or tax credits and how much energy your system should create. With all that, your energy usage history and your current rates they will be able to tell you how long it will take for your system to pay for it's self in savings. If you are considering leasing, generally there is no cost savings. They usually size the system so you are paying them the same amount that you would have been paying the energy company.
Q:Hi, wanting to set up the most basic solar panel system for a cabin in the woods that has enough power to recharge four 2V car batteries during the daytime (i am assuming; we want to run a mini fridge maybe a stove and a few lights at night off the batteries and be able to run it all just off solar during the day) It also needs to be able to power some simple tools during the day... Experience would be absolutely amazing since alot of the info on solar paneling is either really dumbed down, or ridiculously confusing. As of right now I am looking at a 3 panel (45watt in all) solar kit that needs a 300w inverter.... is this sufficient for my power needs? I am just a little perplexed, thanks so much!
If okorder / If the minifridge is one that plugs into 2 volts, that should be okay. Anywhere you can eliminate the inverter will help. Such as converting the stereo over to 2 volts. The nominally rated panels should be mounted at an angle to maximize the solar aspect/exposure. Essentially your lattitude plus 2 degrees for simplicity. If you add 60 Watts in panels you will do much better. Your 3 panels when installed correctly will actually yield over 5 Watts each panel at midday. If you do not achieve that, something is wrong in either the wiring, or a panel. It translates to about point2 Amperes to point5 Amperes at midday. If wired in series for 36 volts, the total current output will be same as a single panel (nominal 5 Watt), but at a higher voltage. If wired in parallel, you achieve the 45 Watts at nominal 2 volts. Watts is voltts times Amps. Also converting your tools over to run off the 2 volts will help, Or charging your tool batteries off the 2 volt buss. There are buck/boost circuits that would be capable of charging the common 4.4 and 8. volt tools out there.
Q:i was reading the popular science magazine and i saw that they might make a Sun Powered it Absolutely NOT possible to make a car with a Solar Panel? I dont see any harm in making it..
Sailboats typically run on wind; hence, Sailboat. I haven't read your article on it though; but, I would think that the solar power would be for the battery powered stuff and possibly a little motor for it. For a car... There are competitions, right now for solar cars. Only they are very light and don't really go that fast. The panels tend to be large and weight a bit more than one would think. I don't understand why they can't simply make a car generate power simply by the rotation of the wheels itself. They could take a hybrid, take out the gasoline portion and it would simply recharge the batteries by the friction of the turning wheels.
Q:Can solar panels be installed on residential complexes or apartment buildings?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on residential complexes or apartment buildings. In fact, they are increasingly being installed on such structures to harness clean and renewable energy for multiple households. The installation process typically involves placing the panels on rooftops or in open spaces within the complex, allowing residents to benefit from reduced electricity costs and a more sustainable living environment.
Q:Can solar panels be used in areas prone to hurricanes or earthquakes?
Yes, solar panels can be used in areas prone to hurricanes or earthquakes. While these natural disasters can pose risks to solar panels, proper installation and structural reinforcement can ensure their resilience. Additionally, advancements in technology have led to the development of more robust solar panels that can withstand extreme weather conditions. However, it is important to consider local regulations, building codes, and additional safety measures to mitigate potential risks.
Q:Can solar panels be installed on golf courses?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on golf courses. In fact, many golf courses are adopting solar energy systems to reduce their carbon footprint and lower their energy costs. The large open spaces and ample sunlight available on golf courses make them ideal locations for installing solar panels. These panels can be placed on rooftops, parking structures, or even on the ground without interfering with the gameplay or aesthetics of the course.
Q:Am using 800watts sukam inverter and have 55watts panel. What controller can i use to connect my solar system to have a max power . Already i have 200 Amp/hr battery
If that 55-watt panel has an open circuit voltage of 7-8 volts, you may get more efficiency by omitting the charge controller completely, and connecting the panel straight to the battery. 55 watts is marginally too small for a 200 AH battery at 2 volts, by the way.
