Q:What ever happened to solar powered panels?
The technology did not die out. It is in fact quite alive and well, and there exist many different manufacturers of solar panels and devices utilizing them. The problem is that the technology has not yet advanced sufficiently to generate large amounts of power with solar panels, at least not with panels of any practical size and weight. You can easily buy a panel which will trickle-charge your car's battery during the day, but nothing that can generate anywhere near the power required to actually move a car's mass at any significant speed. You would need to buy panels with a very large surface area to make any significant amount of power, and these panels would be very heavy and very expensive.

Solar panels are comprised of several individual solar cells. These solar cells function similarly to large semiconductors and utilize a large-area p-n junction diode. When the solar cells are exposed to sunlight, the p-n junction diodes convert the energy from sunlight into usable electrical energy.

Q:Question about using solar panels......?
I don't think it is enough solar power. Your motor requires .5A x 9V = 3.5 watts. The solar cells are .450A x 4V x 2ea. = 3.6 watts, .2A x .5V = .3 watts, .A x 9V = .9 watts total solar = 4.8 watts. The problem with connecting the cells in series to get the right voltage, like the two 4V cells in series with the .5 volt cell (total 9.5 volts) is that the .5 volt cell limits the maximum current to only 0.2A. If you paralleled that with the 9V cell, you would get 9 volts at 0.2 + 0. = 0.3A, too low to operate the motor at its design current and voltage. The best you could do is put the two 4V cells in series, and in parallel with the 9V cell (a blocking diode might be a good idea, but probably not required for such a small array). That way you get 8 volts at 0.55 amps.

. Practically no. You have to account for startup current, and losses in the system. Ideally you would size your solar planel to provide the power you need to charge batteries in the day, for your needs at night. 2. Watts=Volts times Amps Really you just need to match the load and supply for volts, and make sure the supply has enough capacity to run your load. Current will take care of itself., in that the load will take what it needs to do its work. 3. It will bring the voltage down, causing the light to be dimmer.

you completely nailed it!! speaking about large buildings, it would benefit one to do a little more research. my company just installed a 640 collecter system on a million sq foot building. it consists of a absorption chiller (which uses no coolant, just water a silica gel beds, runs of the power of its controller, thats it) 27,000 gallon tank. chiller feeds 2 rotation units and 2 large office spaces for heat and cool. payback expected at less than 5 years. we will expand this system another 200 collectors. residential installs, if tax credits used, achieve 5-7 year payback pending domestic hot water only or dhw and space heating. thermal collectors actually produce more energy than pv panels do, therefore more bang for your buck, also as i hope you all know, pv has around 25% eff, thermal has 95%. also to say the tech part is gone, we use flowmeters that calculate carbon offsets, energy saved, money saved etc...all located in a wireless monitor for the consumer to enjoy.
