- Q:Can you estimate the amount each year in CA.?What are the concerns/issues related to this application.
- I don't know about CA but where I live the predominant fuel for permanently installed back up generators is propane. Propane is used because generators can sit idle for weeks or months between power outages. Gasoline and diesel have limited shelf lives and fuel systems can clog with varnishes when not used. Propane has an unlimited shelf life and does not gum up in the carburetor. Natural gas is not available here. In places where it is available natural gas might be preferable to propane. Its impossible to estimate how much fuel you would use in a year. It depends how big your generator is and how many power failures you go through. Most generator manufacturers will tell you how much fuel their products use in an hour.
- Q:I have a 4 piston Diesel engine on my generator, I have a nasty oil sludge continue to build up every time, I have flushed the engine with engine flush liqui-moly probably six times, but after it is clean the sludge builds up again in couple of days, I got sick and tired of going down there and get all messed up with nasty oil.The engine produces while smoke continuously, not much but visible enough. I get oil coming onto the air filter, the place smells nasty because of this. The light bulbs flicker when running on the generator, it heats up fast and shuts off when I put load on it as an AC. Can someone please help me out and let me know what to do?
- The sludge is an indication of coolant leaking into the oil, as is the white smoke and the fact its over heating, This is due to either a cracked water jacket or sleeve or cylinder head and or gasket, As to what to do? Have it properly diagnosed by a qualified mechanic and if need be rebuild the engine or replace it. As replacing the cylinder sleeves at a reputable shop can cost as much as a new engine.
- Q:i means what's happen in diesel generator while just switch on ?
- Depends whether it is a battery start or air pressure start. If it's started with a battery, the starter cranks the engine with an electric starter. If it is air started, a solenoid valve is energized, or a hand valve is opened to allow the air pressure to crank the engine with an air turbine. That's the first occurance. There is a definite start-up sequence, in the event the engines fails to start within a given time frame.
- Q:Hi, this may be a stupid question but im a city slicker planning on campong and i want to buy a honda generator, What kind of fuel does it use? where do i get it? thanks.
- The manual will tell you. I'm sure it will say to use regular gasoline. Buy the gas at your favorite filling station.
- Q:i want to put three phase current of two diesel generating sets in only three phase.
- Yes you can, just make sure the connections are grounded first!
- Q:How to correctly select oil for diesel generator
- The lubricity of synthetic oil is higher than that of mineral oil, the friction resistance is small, it is not easy to oxidation, and the detergency is strong
- Q:Do you have more insights into this? Japan builds great cars, machinery, tools and high-tech products. Their bullet train is known for almost zero delays in decades. Yet with the Fukushima nuclear power station we have flawed tsunami protection in a location known for powerful earthquakes and tsunamis for at least centuries. I guess no one should be surprised by a ca. 50 feet tsunami at that location. It looks to me like such an obvious blunder. Am I mistaken? - And I mean no offense to the great people of Japan who so valiantly dealt with the terrible tsunami crisis that I admire this very much. Thank you.
- Yes you are mistaken. The Fukushima station was designed to withstand average tsunami that had occurred in that area. However the tusnami that hit was much larger than any seen before in that area, or in recorded human history for that matter. Even if you could design a facility to withstand a 200 or even 500 year disaster, eventually you'll encounter something even larger, and then you'll be right back here whining about why did they only design the structure for a 500 year disaster, blah blah blah. Furthermore, such a facility would be prohibitively expensive and over engineered. Was it a risk to only design something to withstand a once-in-a-century event? Sure, but there's no such thing as 0% risk.
- Q:I been thinking, and it seems to me our future vehicles would be best suited with a small 1~ liter diesel engine turning a generator to power 4 electric motors at the wheels of the car/truck, just like locomotives use. Advantages would be significantly increased fuel economy, AWD, no transmission and axle weight(offset by weight of batteries, longer lasting diesel engine, easier and cheaper to repair due to small engine size, fewer moving parts, and decreased complexity, regenerative braking, significantly reduced emmissions, less noise, no idling when not moving.Seems the advantages would vastly outweigh the disadvantagesDoes anyone build such a vehicle?
- Diesel would be a better alternative both in that high compression engines are more efficient though they also produce more nitrous oxides and diesels can run on biofuels more readily. However you have the problem that you would need a sophisticated computer controlled diesel to avoid the valve clatter while idle that turns a lot of people off. With a full hybrid, the clatter may be minimized but if you wanted the advanced engines, you would have to buy them from Mercedes or Volkswagon. Usually for kit cars, an industrial diesel motors are used ( these are motors designed to run cement mixers, tractors and other equipment ), but the result is a lot of clatter from the valves. Hub motors are in wide use, especially with hybrid buses but they have the down side of being unsprung weight so they severely hamper handling. Trying to do it without hub motors and you might as well go back to the central engine concept. Also the hub motors exist in bus sizes at the moment. Most regenerative braking options are electrical and can only recover a small portion of the power. The Urba-Electric of the 70's used a stepper motor controlled mechanical CVT between the motor and the wheel thereby having mechanical regenerative braking that had higher returns, unfortunately the commercial Electromatic transmission is no longer on the market and such industrial CVT's are limited in their power ratings as they usually used a rubber belt. Hybrids are interesting but they are inherently redundant. They're hardly the ecological salvation for the planet.
- Q:I have never had any interest in cars until recently when diesel engines have started to feel like important and valuable power sources moving forward.
- They've always been popular in Europe as they have ridiculous fuel taxation. And diesels have traditionally gotten better fuel economy. But these days with direct injected turbo gas engines becoming more prevalent the diesel's fuel economy edge is diminishing. Case in point, the BMW 335i and the BMW 335d. The gas engine gets almost the same mileage as the diesel as you can see here fueleconomy /feg/Find.do?a same deal with the MB 350 as you can see here fueleconomy /feg/Find.do?a Diesels are still quite important for cargo transportation, industrial use, and agriculture, as they have always been. But no offense, but if you're just now finding out about diesel cars, then you've missed the boat by a few decades, diesel cars have been around for a long time.
- Q:can they be quiet? I was thinking about buying one sense we seem to have an outage every winter. Just wouldn't want to have an extremely loud generator running disturbing the neighbors
- It depends on the model you buy and typically the more expensive models will equip themselves with a better muffler. (Basically each model will describe their decibel rating). I find most generators will provide about as much noise as a lawn mower. So, it is great to run during the day, but you might consider not running them during the night. I also think a diesel motor is just fine to run as a generator- I find the diesel rigs will run at lower RPMS, and last longer. If you are pluging this thing into your home, dont forget to have a professionally installed transfer switch to avoid electricuting the lineman, otherwise you will need to run extension cords to what you want powered.
