Q:I am kinda really sick of paper cranes, and I was wondering if there's any good method of making paper birds that look, well, like birds. I checked out the one website with instructions, but, well, look at it. I tried it.
I haven't made the other birds on this site but they have a pelican and an owl. I think the pelican looks a bit crane-ish but it may look different in reality. Have fun!

It can be made out of only 1/8 inch balsa wood and wood glue, and is going to be graded by the ration of weight held to structure weight.Could anybody give me some suggestions as to how to go about designing this thing? I already know most of the basics, but if anybody could give me some specific tips, they would be greatly appreciated.Thanks!
Not enough information because a crane can be many shapes and have various forms of anchoring or counterbalancing the load. If you are not allowed to anchor to a base and can't use weight to counter the load (if all balsa) then you have to create legs and lift the load between them - Basically the design will need to be triangles in truss to take the compression and prevent twisting and a long upper piece in tension to act like the cable you don't have. I would make two legs that are each 3 sided trusses that meet at the top and have a single rod across the bottom to keep them from spreading. Then I would make a longish beam with flat triangles for stiffness and use a few uprights to position the tension rod. Hang the weight on one end and push down on the other so it pivots on the short legs.

I believe it is pretty difficult to tell and searching the schematics of the crane stock will be as well. Best way is to check out your local gun range and the folks there that shoot guns with crane stocks installed. Also, though I am not too sure about this one, check if the crane stock is compatible for mil-spec buffer tubes and commercial spec buffer tubes. Otherwise, I am very much inaccurate in any of this response.

If you mean can you be a crane operator, that is up to an employer. The bottom of the triangle is 10.388 ft + 10.388 ft = 20.776ft So we have two sides of the triangle and now just need to find the angle where the triangle forms with those two sides: cosine of angle = adjacent side / hypotenuse cosine of angle = 20.766 / 27 = 0.7691 and the arc cosine of that = 39.7 degrees So rounding it off, angle of crane = 40 degree
