Sure, why not? Usually, the metal area when most water pumps are bolted too are cleaned with a scraper of some kind and old gasket matter is removed. That surface should be cleaned, flat, and free of irregularity. Most mechanics, if they use any kind of stickum - like contact cement from a tube, or the costlier, but not-needed specialty sealers, is applied to the pump surface so the gasket stays put and not move when installing the bolts. The glue does not do any actual sealing, just the fiber gasket will. None needs to be applied to the engine side that you scraped clean. Make sense to you? It's probably a good idea to service the cooling system with a non-caustic flush cleaner before hand -since all the coolant will come out during the change. Then add a additive that neutralizes acids with the new anti-freeze.

INSPECTION Check body assembly and vane for rust or corrosion. Check for rough operation due to excessive end play. NOTE: Water pump cannot be disassembled and should be replaced as a unit. INSTALLATION Use a scraper to remove old liquid gasket from water pump. Also remove old liquid gasket from mating surface of cylinder block. Apply a continuous bead of liquid gasket to mating surface of water pump. Use Genuine Liquid Gasket or equivalent. Install water pump. Install remaining parts in reverse order of removal. Install drive belts. Refill engine coolant. After installation, run engine for a few minutes, and check for leaks.

Is it a linear calculation of percentage of drop from maximum head height multiplied by the flow rate, (eg 5/20 * 2000 = 500 litres per hour?), or is it more complicated than that?

If your pump has more capacity than you need, you can always restrict the discharge and create extra artificial head.

Q:I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cyl while driving home the other day my check engine light came on ,then I noticed my battery was loosing its' charge ,then I noticed my temperature gauge rising very fast.I stoped to see what the problem was.The vehicle had over heated and the serpentine belt was partially off Iet it cool down then I put water in it and drove it home which was about a quarter of a mile.I noticed no problems with the fan hitting the water pump pully until I put the belt back on .My water pump pulley appears to be off line how do I fix this?

The water pump pulley is bolted to the water pump flange. The flange bolts are sheared off or have worked loose and the pulley/belt combination are no longer turning the water pump. If the flange has come loose from the water pump shaft, it will still be bolted to the water pump pulley. This may have also been caused by a locked up water pump. You can not fix a loose water pump flange or a locked up water pump. A new/rebuilt water pump will have to be installed. Happy Trails!

If okorder , I have serious doubts about your doing a timing belt which has to come off and go back on to do the water pump. I also can't picture a water pump going bad in under 15 years or 150,000 miles. Spendy job, so please be sure before disassembling. Q:Okay, I'm setting up an NFT hydroponic garden and am now looking for the water pump. I would like some suggestions for one that will give a steady stream at a good rate for the plants. But, it must have a minimum lift of 5ft to reach the first level.I would prefer one with a flow rate adjustment but if you could at least make a suggestion to the GPH it should pump for the right flow after a 5 ft climb I could search more in that range for one I like.Thank you!

I think you may want to look at the small pond pumps and just about any nursery or home supply store or landscaping store. they may have the specs on hand, or see if they can demo one for you. some places have a display pond set up already. You also might try a small swimming pool pump and put a voltage regulator in the line and adjust the pump speed that way. maybe rig a sewing machine pedal in the line and use a C clamp for an adjuster. I love rigging thing. It may not work with a gfi plug.

Yes it can! I am curious though if what you are hearing is a really bad water pump or spark knock due to excessive heat or possibly a blown head gasket. Remove the belt and shake the pulley on the water pump. If it moves or rattles at all, then it is probably bad. Seems strange that it hasn't tossed the belt off though if it were that bad. Worth looking though, testing is free, parts are not....
