Q:A boulder became dislodged in the middle of the road, right at the entrance. Instead of removing it, they put caution tape around it. It was in a blind spot and I hit it at night when the tape was not visible. They are saying they aren t responsible. I can only file small claims if I have already spent the money to fix it and I do not have $3,000 to spend on this. What are my options? (I live in WA State)

The water lost could serve a much larger population than that for a day. The problem is that it takes time to notify the water department or company, time to get the equipment out, and time to locate and turn the valve upstream of the break. It's not as simple as flipping a switch from your office. Those valves are big and not used often, so they tend to stick. The water suppliers work as quickly as they can. After all, it's their stock in trade that is being wasted and they are the ones who have to answer to the governmental agencies if there are fish kills.

Q:I'm interested to know about the General Alarm signals used in sea vessels.They seem to vary greatly from ship to ship depending on the country of origin. The only one that seems to be consistent is the signal used to indicate abandon ship, which is 7 short blasts on the alarm, followed by 1 long blast.Having never heard a general alarm before, what is the duration of a short or long blast?Also, what other signals are commonly used? And are they specific to any country?

A picture would help. But if you are talking about a Bronze P-trap pipe being corroded then I think I can help. There are two options if all that is bad are the threads then you can cut that off the old P-trap and replace it with a P-trap that uses compression fittings. IF the Bronze P-trap pipe is too bad off usually you will find that there is also a large copper pipe it is soldered too. What I do is cut off the old Bronze P-trap at the copper piece. If you can, remove the Bronze piece from the copper pipe with a torch. I like to do this when possible but it is not mandatory. Clean up what ever you have left and use a compression replacement P-trap. I use PVC. They last longer. I can't see what you see so if this is not helpful then a picture would help us better answer this question.

Nipples, as a plumbing term, are short pieces of copper, brass, black pipe, fittings, threaded on both ends. The I.D. is a variable as they come in several sizes. The old pipes, nipples, may have been blocked with hardness mineral, especially on the hot side.
