Do not place rubber backed area rugs or any rug that cannot breathe over a carpet as the carpet on the bottom will discolor to a yellow tint that is permanent.

I've seen some other answers here that say things like quot;decorations, rugs, put it on the floor.quot; well obviously if I am having to ask, I'm not able to follow those instructions as easily as you. Steam clean it. Buy one, rent one or hire a professional. They are perfectly fine on carpets. I have my own steam cleaner and it's gets used constantly. Don't waste your money on scotch guard products. They are surface only and once you wipe up a spill or clean the carpet, the scotch guard is gone. Probably one of the most over rated products on the market. The main things that harm carpet are not cleaning regularly, not vacuuming regularly or choosing the wrong carpet pad.

The pattern is beautiful and the rug itself is is good condition, however I'd like to brighten it up! -Especially the white areas which have now gone yellow. Anyone have any ideas on how to clean/treat this rug and restore/brighten it without damaging it with harsh chemicals, like bleach?

You may need to have the rug treated by a pro cleaner. If you do look for a baneclean dealer who does rugs. If you want to try use a store rented steam cleaner use Woolite in place of the store steam chemicals. mix the Woolite per directions. Mix with warm water use a very soft brush and work the Woolite into the rug. Use the steam cleaner to rinse with plain warm water. One pass with the plain water , 3 passes with suction only to remove the water. Let dry for a day or more before use. There are chemical brighteners, try to avoid.

For decent carpet with good pad, figure about $3 per square foot (installed price). (cheap carpet $2-2.50, high end cpt $4) Laminate comes in many different prices, based on quality. Expect to spend $4.50-5.50 for decent laminate, as low as $3 for the cheap stuff. Buy the best you can afford, you really get what you pay for ESPECIALLY in Laminate. PLEASE, for your own sake, make sure you put in tile landings at the doorways to preserve the life of your laminate floors. Laminate on the stairs is a BAD idea, go with carpet there.

I just went carpet shopping today and found that for two rooms that measure approx. 26ftx 16ft that it will cost almost $900. I even removed all of the old carpet and padding myself. It ain't real cheap!
