The size is relevant. Is this a small portable set for homes, or a large stationary unit for a building. I'll assume the latter. Enclose it in a sound barrier, but bring the exhaust out the top and make an air inlet at the bottom that goes to the air intake of the engine. You may need additional openings for ventilation to keep the engine from overheating. You may be able to bring the radiator outside the enclosure to solve that problem. Make sure you have a very good muffler. Look into finding a better one. You may be able to buy an enclosure for the generator, check with the manufacturer. PS, you seem to have this located indoors. That is a very bad idea.

a Generator set can be AC or DC. More commonly AC, because most commercial machines and equipment is AC. Commercial DC gen sets are commonly found electromagnetic applications. Some are used in Traction applications like subways and trains. Some DC motor-generator sets provide the field currents for large commercial power Alternators/ AC generators as in hydro-electric dams. My experience AC generators have less maintenance issues than DC units. The control (switching) of large DC currents is much more demanding than AC and has a whole set of problems that are unique to DC. DC controls devices are typically heavier for the same power than AC AC current switching is easier due to the current wave passing through a zero point every half cycle. The AC voltage/ Power can be more easily manipulated through transformers. There is tons of information on this subject available on the net. Yours: Grumpy
Q:I live in southern Indiana, and am currently living through an awesome ice storm. Anyway, my parents bought a diesel powered portable generator. It is hooked into the main panel of the house. When you crank it up and turn the lights in the house on, they flicker, as does the TV screen. It has proper voltage on each leg of the 240. I brought my generator over and everything works fine. Any ideas?
The generator would seem to be working above its recommended constant or optimum load. It could be too small for the demands it could be of lower quality it could be a defect it could be a dirty carburetor or injection system it could be dirty fuel or or ice in the fuel lines. All the things that can make your car run badly can also happen to generators. Most people install them and forget about them till an emergency without good preventative maintenance sometimes they fail when you need them most.

Diesel Issues: Regular oil changes - about 2:1 to a gas-fired generator. Diesel fuel is may gel in very cold weather - you may have to use a kerosene mix. Diesel fuel has a shelf-life such that you will have to add fuel stabilizers and run out the fuel at least three times per year (more in a humid climate) to prevent breakdown. You will have to change the fuel filter at least once per year. If you run out of diesel and cannot get to it - you are out of luck. Which leads to liquid fuel storage issues, shelf-life and so forth. Diesel fuel is a bit over twice the cost of natural gas as a fuel in this situation. Go with the natural gas unit. It is new, has a warranty and you _know_ that it will have no hidden flaws. Now, if by Gas you mean gasoline - go with the diesel unless you are in a very cold climate. Hands down.

Q:I recently purchased a book on how to make a hydrogen generator that mentions either gas or diesel. However common sense tells me that a diesel engine requires some sort of lubrication such as cooking oil etc. I have tried to send a email but cannot get an answer.
