Q:what will I need to wind power my sail boat?
My friend has a Westsail 32. He powers it with a AroGen 6 wind generator and two 125watt solar panels. So what does this power? 34 inch screen, with Satellite TV, laptop computer, mac mini computer, playstation 3, xBox, 32 inch monitor connect to a power mac tower with 4 very large hard drives busing all night long (Lol), LED through out the boat, stereo system, water maker, water pumps, and other miscellaneous stuff. Of course this equipment is not all on at one time but he has had it all turn on once before just to see if he could do it. What you need to have with the wind generator and solar panels is a large bank of batteries. Typically about 4 times the capacity of your daily consumption. The reason for this is to make your batteries last longer. Up to 7 years before you need to replace them. If you only have one bank you may need to replace them yearly. We did that and it get expensive. It's key to have at least 3 to 4 times the capacity. You'll also need an inverter. It take your DC batteries and creates AC for all your electronics. Yes you can by DC appliances and some of your navigation equipment will run on DC, but you'll find is cheaper to buy AC appliances and you'll also have more selection. He has a inverter with the brand name Outback which we found one of the best. It's pricey, but it has a built in computer that thinks about everything. It's great for when you forget to flip some damn switch, it will take steps to protect it's self and/or pull power from some other source. It even helps you make coffee in the morning. Please feel free to contact me if you need more information. Wind is an awesome power source and best of all it's completely free until the feds figure out a way to tax it. hahah Captain Jack
Q:Diesel generator selection criteria?
Diesel generators are widely used in telecommunications, finance, emergency power supply departments, hospitals, schools, commercial departments
Q:how can i know electric actautor working on deisel generator?
By the revolutions of the generator, or the (presuming AC output) frequency of the power generated. If the frequency is low, the revolutions are low. If the revolutions drop off when load is added, or frequency falls, you have a problem. somewhere.
Q:are diesel generators allowed on commercial truck ?
My uncle has one on his truck. It is plumbed in to his fuel tank.
Q:charging a marine battery with a car battery through a power inverter?
Just run heavy gage wire from one battery to the other, pos to pos neg to neg, no big deal, however your alternator ain't gonna like working that hard and will go see Allah in a very short period of time, so a high output alt will be needed sooner rather than later, and with the price of gas and seeing the shape some of those ice cream trucks are in, I see a lot of melted ice cream in your future. maybe a small generator would be more cost effective. almost forgot. if the wattage output of your inverter is not enough to power a freezer, which take quite a bit, you'll smoke the motor out of your freezer in a matter of days if not hours. yea lots of melted ice cream
Q:Does anyone else see the importance of diesel engines in the coming years?
They've always been popular in Europe as they have ridiculous fuel taxation. And diesels have traditionally gotten better fuel economy. But these days with direct injected turbo gas engines becoming more prevalent the diesel's fuel economy edge is diminishing. Case in point, the BMW 335i and the BMW 335d. The gas engine gets almost the same mileage as the diesel as you can see here fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?a same deal with the MB 350 as you can see here fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?a Diesels are still quite important for cargo transportation, industrial use, and agriculture, as they have always been. But no offense, but if you're just now finding out about diesel cars, then you've missed the boat by a few decades, diesel cars have been around for a long time.
Q:I have a 20 kw westerbeke diesel generator that surges speed wise.?
There are several models of the 20K Westerbeke. Can you post up which model you have? It could be as simple as an adjustment. The actuators do not generally fail. However, if you have a lot of hours, say 2000, then the actuator spring may be worn out. Please post up your model and I will see what I can do. Also you can email me.
Q:Is there out there tri -fuel 15-20kw stand by generator?
I don't get what you mean by not able to use all the power. The generator will produce it's rated output, and little more, from one or any combination of it's outlets - single or three phase, including the 12 volt charging system. The total output of the machine is available as a function of the total load connected, not the number of plugs or the variety of outlets - it is the total load that counts. Petrol is the least efficient, and the most dangerous fuel to use and store. The amount of fires involving LPG or similar fuels is a fraction of those involving petrol in road accidents for a start. A slow speed Diesel generator correctly sized for your normal load (allow 33% additional capacity for starting induction motors etc.) will use the least fuel, and be the longest lasting by a large margin of any of the choices you suggest above. The cheapest initial option will be a petrol powered system, but the most expensive to run, and the earliest to wear out. The running costs will be much cheaper on propane etc., and the engine will run much cleaner and last longer as a result. A high speed diesel unit will cost more than the petrol version, but will not be as expensive as the better slow speed types, it will be economical, but is not going to last as well as the slow speed models. Well made slow speed diesel units will cost the most to install, but will be the most economical both to run, service and in longevity. The cheapest initial option I have found, is always the most expensive in the medium and long range. If the unit is purely for emergency power, it should be run under load every month at least, and the fuel must be kept fresh, or treated and constantly monitored to withstand long term storage - this is where the propane storage is particularly effective. The worst thing that can be done with any backup power system is to allow it to sit for any length of time without being used. Many fail at critical times because of this.
Q:Couple questions about backup generators for buildings?
They are not normally running. If power fails there will be some automatic emergency lighting powered by batteries which should allow the backup generators plenty of time to get started. They are often diesel powered. You can hope that they are reasonably maintained and tested from time-to-time.
Q:Japan didn't have backup power to H2O pumps after EQ. Will nuclear always be a problem because of human errors?
Trust physicists!!! Nuclear Plants will go on. I am determined about it.
