Q:how to make a steel helmet?
Steel okorder.com
Q:acrylic vs. steel tapers which is better?
Steel is better. Acrylic is porous so isn't as suitable for piercing jewellery as steel. Steel can also slide through easier for some people, acrylic isn't quite as smooth. For tapers it doesn't make a huge deal of difference as they're only passing through your ear briefly, not being worn as jewellery, but if they're close in cost anyway then go for the steel. And the plugs you insert after putting the taper through should always be steel, titanium or glass until your stretch has healed.
Q:what steel is best for a survival/utility knife?
Ok, lets define what is Damascus steel. The modern Damascus is basically any steel that shows a pattern. Patterns are accomplished by 1. manipulating the crystal structure or 2. by combining 2 or more different alloys together. The blade you are looking at is referred to as a pattern welded blade. Damascus is only as strong as it's base components + heat treat and design. The strongest will be obtained by combining high carbon and low carbon steels. I do this by using steel cable. The patterns aren't real bold but are interesting none the less. To break it you must brake the hard steel and tear through the soft iron. The laminated stuff works the same way. For greater edge holding I use all high carbon, varying alloy content from simple carbon to chromium/nickle alloys. These are what you normally find in pattern welded blades. A fine pattern that has many lamination's crossing the edge will offer the best edge holding. Properly done one can get the DCE or damascus cutting effect where the soft layers wear away faster than the hard layers almost making the blade self sharpening. Is that blade good? Buy it if you like it, it won't compare to a well made hand forged blade but is much cheaper. sorry for the overload.
Q:Which is stronger - sterling silver or stainless steel?
Sterling is always best, but, in the 30's and 40's India also plated silver with brass overlay, believe it or not. They thought the look would be more attractive to tourist and more Indian traditional. Pieces marked India have been found to be 80% silver with brass overlay. Several times I have taken India marked pieces that looked brass to a metallurgist and found they are actually 80% silver with brass coatings. Like anything else, this is not always the case, either way, pieces marked and numbered will draw attention.
Q:stainless steel properties??
Stainless steel is a generic term for a whole range (there are more than 60 types) of Fe-Cr alloys. They all contain some amount of C and some alloys include a good number of other alloying elements. In almost all cases, the materials have corrosion resistance due the Cr atoms that are in solid solution with the Fe matrix. Under corrosive conditions, the Cr forms a thin tight coherent layer of Cr-oxide. This Cr oxide coating prevents further corrosion so long as it is not chemically or physically removed. If the SS has been subject to mechanical abrasion, the corrosion resistance can sometimes be restored by a light exposure to nitric acid which passivates the surface, restoring the Cr-oxide layer. The carbon content is an important factor in corrosion preformance but so is the heat treatment. Under the wrong conditions and in different environments, all SSs can rust. One of the most common corrosion problems is sensitization which occurs in the heat affect zone (HAZ) around welds. If the C content is high enough and the heat is high enough, the Cr atoms in solid solution form Cr-carbides and are no longer available to form a protective Cr-oxide. The corrosion resistance can be restored by appropriate heat treatment.
Q:Why should I use stainless steel cookware?
I can't understand why you're having difficulty. My pans are as good as the day they were bought.I would never return to non-stick after having my stainless steel pans! Non stick coatings come off in the food-yuk! What are you cooking in them? Are you trying to wash them in the dishwasher? That never works well. I always put water in mine if I've done a custard or stew, beans or things like that, for a little soak before washing by hand in hot soapy water. They really are great even when I have burnt something, because you can scrape the burn with a sharp implement and you do no damage at all to the pan. I highly recommend them.
Q:why does steel rust?????????????
Steel is made by refining iron. Iron is mined as a red powdery ore. Unfortunately, when moisture and oxygen are present, the steel attempts to revert to its original state.
Q:Can your sweat tarnish real silver & steel jewelry?
steel shouldn't really tarnish, it rusts and moisture increases that. Silver tarnishes when exposed to air and sulfur. Moisture increases the process a bit, but it happens anyway. Sweat is not gross, it's a necessary function of your body, otherwise you would die. A lot of sports people wear jewelry and they sweat a lot. If you wear the jewelry all the time, that will prevent the tarnish a bit. If you take it off, clean it (water and dish washing liquid), dry it and put it in a zip lock back to keep it away from air and moisture. In the end, cleaning the jewelry is quick and easy so don't worry about it.
Q:Hardenability of steel?
Bit tricky to explain and I don't know muh about it but steel on its own has lost of gaps in it ( the molecular structure) and when carbon is added thos gaps are filled, I think of it like this: it is easier to punch through expanded polystyrene( with all the little balls) than unexpanded(just a lump of plastic) as the balls are not properly joined and have air pockets between them.
Q:Why is it that steel at its strongest with a 1.3% carbon ratio?
Carbon fiber has better tensile capability then steel meaning its better while pulled aside. Plus you could mould the fiber to make autos-or homes-out of carbon fiber.
