Q:What is mild steel and what items are made from it?
not really. Coins aren't usually made from steel (e.g. an US cent is mainly zinc which will melt with releasing toxic fumes while welding), spoons are usually stainless steel (which is not mild steel), bottle caps can be steel but also aluminum. Fasteners can be made from a wide variety of metals. Generally mild steel is steel with a relatively low content of carbon (2%) which makes it easier to weld. It's used a lot for structure in building (e.g. rebar). Mild steel is also cheaper than other kinds of steel. Tools are usually made from high carbon steel. Generally I'd recommend to go to the scrap yard and pick up some shapes and pieces you like if you don't mind having to clean the rust off. Most will be mild steel. Welding small and thin pieces is much more challenging than welding larger pieces of metal. You are more likely to melt a bottle cap than weld it. Also your steel needs to be clean (no paint, sandblast or brush rust off). I would highly recommend to talk your project over with your teacher before you get all frustrated.

Besides the composition of the steel, the tempering is VERY important. I would buy a knife from a company with a good reputation and not worry about what material their metallurgist chose to make a high quality knife. You definitely do not have the knowledge of someone with a degree in metals and many years of experience.

Q:About hydrolics which one used in steel melting shop?
The correct spelling is hydraulics. I haven't heard the term steel melting shop you probably means a foundry or a steel mill The most obvious example i can think of is hydraulic-operated fork lifts. Hydraulic cylinders are used to lift the forks and to tilt them upwards or downwards. The valves are coneccted to levers next to the steering wheel. Hydraulic pressure is supplied by a hydraulic pump driven by a propane or diesel engine. In some forklift designs the wheels are also not connected directly to the engine, but driven by hydraulic motors. There are also a large variety of machines used in steel mills and metalworking companies to cut and shape metal parts. for example, press brakes, plate cutting shears, stamping presses, hole punch machines, drawing presses, etc. These types all operate in much the same basic way. They use a very large cylinder or group of cylinders to apply many tons of force to different kinds of metal working tools.
Q:Can you WELD STEEL to ALUMINUM? How much heavier/stronger is STEEL?
I can't weld steel to aluminum, and generally speaking I'd say the answer is no, however, there are some special procedures that can make a metallic bond between steel and aluminum, it can be done with explosive welding. A lot of multi-ply cookware is made with aluminum sandwiched between stainless steel, there is so much of it that I imagine there is another way besides explosives, but I don't know what. In any case it is not a normal workshop procedure. Steel is often considerably easier to weld, but it depends on the alloy. some steels are difficult to weld and some aluminum alloys are fairly easy, but on the average steel is easier. as far as brittle/ flexible it again depend on the alloy, some steels are less brittle than some aluminum alloys and the other way around. Steel does have a higher modulus of elasticity, so for a given size steel is stiffer, but that is for elastic deformation, for plastic deformation steel often has a higher yield strength, but some of the more exotic aluminum alloys can be stronger than low grades of steel.

Steel is a global commodity. There is some variety in product (flat rolled, tubing, etc), but basically the same product worldwide. Cost to the customer includes shipping of a very heavy product. Inputs are also heavy and costly to ship. Inputs: - Coal - Iron Ore. Some firms have the ability to recycle old steel, a competitive advantage. - Energy (very energy intensive industry) - Labor - Machinery. A new blast furnace is more efficient than 50 years old. So the most profitable steel firms have some of these characteristics: - Proximity to raw materials - Proximity to customers - Access to cheaper means of transportation; rail and sea - Newer machinery - Cheaper labor force - Reasonable cost for electricity and fuel for furnaces
