You can. A steel case is cheaper to make than a brass case, resulting in cheaper ammo, in wich they normaly use cheap, corrosive loadings. So steel cased stuff will normally be very dirty to shoot. Clean your gun after shooting and you will be fine. The story of them wearing the extractor is crap, however: the extractor is made of a steel way harder than the cheapo-steel the case is made of. It wonný scrach it. Even if it would, considering the amount of money you save with the cheap ammo like bear and wolf, changing the extractor once in a while would still be saving you a ton of money.

I would go with some in one and less in the other. Given that steel prices have collapsed (and seeing as the Chinese economy is going into a recession, they will probably stay low for a while) I would say that because US Steel is a blue chip company it will be around for the long term, but, it won't make much for a while. GE on the other hand has been beaten down thanks to some mismanagement issues under current CEO Jeffrey Immelt, however, they have a range of strong products (save for their broadcast division, RCA/NBC). Given that the stock is at a severe low with the company itself being worth quite a bit (with a fair amount of bailout funds coming to its' financial division) and the Obama administrations' green initiatives coming online over the next couple of years the demand for their products will be high. I don't follow your calculations. It seems to me that the piece you show could be made from .01 steel and still be less than a pound. Also, it is hard to get steel thinner than .015 because anything thinner is not very useful. If you made it out of .015 steel and used a high strength steel, it might be useful. You wouldn't be bashing any skulls, but with some spikes on the end, it could do some damage, and protect against knives or other hand weapons. You also won't get any bullet resistance out of anything that thin. If you want to bash skulls and deflect bullets, you have to get up to at least .10 and several pounds. Any weight on your hands slows down the speed of your punch, but this is compensated for by the increased energy of impact carried by the extra mass. Also, having something hard to protect your hands allows for harder hits and more damage to the opponent. An interesting idea, but it would take some testing to figure out the optimum configuration. One problem I see is that it completely encloses the hand, making it impossible to use the hand for anything else. So you would have to put it on and take it off a lot, and there would be cases where you wouldn't be able to put it on when you needed it. For that reason, I would not wear two at one time. I would make it heavier and wear it on one hand for bashing skulls and deflecting weapons, and keep the other hand free for other things.

Actually, the opposite is true. CAST IRON is generally brittle, while mild steel is not. Cast iron has a carbon content from about 2%-4%. Mild steel has less than one tenth as much carbon as cast iron- around 0.2% - 0.3%. Cast iron also typically has from 1%-3% silicon. Most mild steel contains no more than 0.3% silicon. Steel melts at ~1450 degrees C. The addition of large amounts of carbon and silicon to C.I. lower the melting point to around 1200 C and make it more fluid than molten steel. Obviously this makes it easier to melt and to pour. The main advantage of cast iron is it's cheap to produce. It also has some desirable properties despite it's brittleness. For example it's easy to cut and carve with machine tools. It's also very heat resistant and excellent at absorbing vibration. For this reason C.I. was commonly used for engine blocks and exhaust manifolds in cars and trucks in the past, (Cast aluminum engine blocks are more common these days because Al is much lighter and conducts heat better.) Cast iron also rusts much more slowly than steel which is why it's still commonly used for pipes. C.I. pipes have been known to last 300 years.
