I'd say it's about even now. Each metal has its advantages and disadvantages. Al is lighter than Fe so it's favored in transportation; even though Al is more expensive than Fe it pays in fuel savings. Al replaced Fe in cans because we can taste Fe more easily. In the future look for composites to obsolete both metals.

Aluminum foil is made for the oven. You can keep aluminum foil in there for hours. The aluminum foil pan you have are the disposable ones. You use those once or twice and throw them away. They will be just fine! I've used them plenty of times. They're convenient b/c if you're bringing muffins to someone- you can bring them in the aluminum container and don't care about getting the container back.

I am quite sure any acid strong enough to dissolve aluminium would be able to dissolve iron and steel, as acid + metal equations can be substituted with any metal and any acid.

I don't know the specifics, but I know it's not more than the extraction process. When aluminum is mined, it is in the form of bauxite ore. From this ore, only about half contains aluminum oxide. Then, from the mass of aluminum oxide (alumina), only about half of that will yield the pure aluminum we use for cans, airplanes, etc. So for every 2000 pounds that are mined, we only get about 500 pounds of aluminum. The process is extremely energy intensive and tears up the landscape where bauxite is mined. Transport adds to the pollution. Some of the biggest bauxite producers in the world are China, Russia, Canada, the United States, Australia, and Brazil, so overseas transport is frequently involved, especially in countries that use a lot of it. Furthermore, it is often shipped in bauxite or alumina form, when it is heavier to carry. Aluminum recycling, however, starts with the pure product and ends with the pure product, and the process is fairly quick. The aluminum can you recycle today will return to shelves within about 60 days. Furthermore, aluminum does not degrade in quality like some other materials so it can be reused indefinitely. Dissolve it with an acid--vinegar's your best bet there unless you've got a way to get a hold of a stronger acid that'll do this quicker. Once all the aluminum's dissolved, put in some magnesium like you can get from one of those fire starting tools that's just a brick of magnesium with a spark strip on it. The magnesium will ionize and the aluminum will precipitate out of the solution. Add the magnesium in as small of individual quantities as you can, too, to keep the size of individual precipitate particles down. Also, I recommend neutralizing the acid before adding the magnesium in case there's any acidity left--baking soda will work fine and doesn't stink like ammonia. If the solution's too acidic when you add the magnesium, the magnesium will go for the acid instead of the aluminum.
