Q:deflection calculations in a steel cylinder?
In most engineering calculations we have to make some assumptions about ideal behavior of a material otherwise we would not be able to simplify our equations to manageable sizes. Your steel cylinder (which I'll call a pipe) is made of a certain type of steel. That steel type has property tolerances listed in a steel manual to help you know about your steel before you begin. You'll need to know the cross-sectional area of the pipe and the weight of the TV to determine an average stress on the pipe. Obviously the weight of the TV is the force it generates. The force is its mass x gravitational acceleration. Since we typically think of steel as an elastic material, we think of it stretching like a rubber band or a spring. You pull it down with a TV and it deflects a certain amount, and will return to its original length when the TV is removed. It is typical to assume that all steel, regardless of its strength, has the same value for this elastic property. It is commonly referred to as the elastic modulus. This value will help you determine what type of strain occurs under what type of stress. So, once you have the stress, you can get the strain by using the elastic modulus. Once you have the strain you can determine the deflection based on the pipe length. Having the steel properties will help you determine how close your TV comes to stressing the pipe to its yield stress. If you reach a yield stress, your steel will deflect, but when you take the TV off it will not return to its original shape. I hope I've helped outline some of the things you'll need to do for the project, I tried not to give away specifics so that you can actually engage your brain around the project. Q:what is the densest type of steel alloy?
The density of steels ranges from about 7.7 to a bit over 8.0 g/cm^3, depending on the specific type. Some of the tool steels (a group that contains alloying elements such as cobalt, molybdenum, and tungsten) and some of the stainless steels tend to be the most dense. Steels are a very large family of alloys, having in common that iron is the principal ingredient (They are iron-based, and ALL steels are mostly iron, by definition. Nickel-based superalloys such as inconel and hastelloy are therefore not steels). There are other elements present in steel - usually carbon, at a minimum. The range of carbon content for ordinary steels runs from a trace (~.1% or so) up to a maximum of 2%, theoretically, though actual carbon contents above 1% are fairly rare. Many other elements may be added to produce various types of steels having specific properties. In corrosion-resistant steels, carbon is usually present in only minute quantities, with chromium (400 series) or chromium plus nickel (300 series) being the major alloying additions. In the 400 series grades that can be hardened by heat treatment, hardening is accomplished though the combined effects of the carbon and chromium. The 300 series alloys can be hardened (and strengthened) only through cold working (strain hardening). Density has no direct relationship to tensile strength, BTW.
Q:Does anyone know about steel framed houses?
The humidity is not at all related to the framework of any house. Galvanized steel has become popular especially in commercial applications because lumber costs are increasing exponentially. Consider that any home built should be adequately ventilated, insulated, and certainly constructed. Consider where the house is,,,IE: Near water; in a tropical setting; prone to being in an area that floods; or gets a lot of rain. The exterior and interior of a steel framed house is the same as a wood frame. I'd go with block personally and steel roof rafters and joists. Once the house is built, adequate ventilating, heating, and/or air conditioning should be accomplished to keep the humidity levels tolerable, and not effect mold, mildew, excesssive heat, etc. Rev. Q:Steel or Nylon strings for my guitar?
You need to decide which type of strings you prefer BEFORE you select a guitar. Guitars are designed for one or the other types of string and they aren't interchangeable. If you try to put steel strings on a classical guitar. you'll ruin the guitar because it isn't built to withstand the extra tension that steel strings have. If you put nylon strings on a steel stringed guitar, the strings won't have enough tension to vibrate the top...resulting in low volume and horrible tone. To decide which type of guitar you need, ask yourself what genre of music you expect to be playing the most. Nylon stringed (classical) guitars have a rich full tone and are primarily for playing classical, flamenco, or folk music. Steel stringed guitars have a full but twangy tone and are primarily used for rock, pop, blues, and country music. You can play any genre of music on either style guitar, but it will sound more authentic if you match the music to the guitar. Best of luck to you, whichever style you choose.

Q:How difficult is it to harden steel?
Some steel won't 'harden' very much to begin with. Mild steel found commonly around the shop/farm/house has few alloys other than carbon, and may not get the desired hardness no matter what you do. A quick test to see what type you have (mild steel vs. alloy) is to touch it to a grinding wheel.
Q:What minerals are mixed to make steel?
It depends on the type of steel that you want. For example- A cold drawn carbon steel spring wire consists of Carbon,Silicon,Manganese,sulphur potassium. If you want to make an alloy steel you can also add chrome,vanadium , nickel etc. It depends on the combinations and percentages of each used.
Q:What is extruded steel?
Extruded steel is only the steel being run through a die when it is heated, it usually reduces the size of the grain of the steel itself, enhancing toughness. Realistically though, in a handgun, it doesn't matter if the frame is cast or forged, both types will hold up to any amount of abuse, unless you use it as a sledgehammer, and are splitting stones with it, then the forged frame would win. 4140 is more than adequate for a slide/frame. Hell, even mild steel would be adequate as long as you don't mind some dings and scratches, and again, don't use it as a sledgehammer...
