Q:Whats better, 1045, or 440 stainless steel?
Type 440 combines such a high grade of cutlery steel, toughness and economy that it is actually known as razor blade steel. Browsing around (a lot) more, it seems that 1045 Surgical Steel is popular in straight razors used by barbers. These razors are honed by stropping with leather and last practically forever. From the above, I would guess that it might be easier to lose the edge on 1045, but also easier to re-sharpen it, that it won't easily knick because probably not so hard as 440. I'm not sure if it would be more expensive, unless it has a superior handle etc. So, I would expect to spend a little more effort over the lifetime of the 1045, maybe pay a little more for it, but have a longer lifetime. hth.
Q:UNITED STATES STEEL OR GE?
i think you should invest in marlyn co. with protection against friends who act like hoes!!!!! charmin ultra less is more!!
Q:Best battle-ready katana steel?
There is no such thing as a battle ready katana... if it is not ready for battle - it is not a katana. Having said that: The hardness of the cutting edge depends on the carbon content the better (in general). 1045 is poor quality steel for sword manufacture. Musashi swords are cheap pieces of crap. 1060 is better. Some manufacturers use modern materials that aren't perhaps consistent with traditional manufacture, like 9260 silicon spring steel or even L6 Bainite. Damascus steel is not a type of steel at all. It is a folding technique that creates a wavy grain in the metal. It may or may not mean that a sword is good. No swords will stand up to contact with other swords. They will inevitably be damaged. The best way to find a quality sword is to ask you instructor. There are no quality swords under a thousand dollars. The answer also depends on what you are going to do with the sword. It may also depend on the style or school of swordsmanship.
Q:Rusted steel straps on deck posts?
If these steel straps are rusting through and on their last legs, a coat of paint is going to be cosmetic at best. Replace these straps with new ones. The originals were either very poorly galvanized, or you live someplace with a very corrosive environment. In any event, paint can't save this sort of thing. Steel brackets serve a real purpose, and after they're weakened, they can't do that anymore. How would your home hold up in an earthquake, for example? What you're proposing doesn't sound safe.
Q:Steel Wool + 9V Battery Question...?
The reason the steel wool catches fire is because the strands of steel are so fine and they have a high resistance. The thin strands get to red-hot very quickly, compared to larger gauge copper wire which has lower resistance and can dissipate the heat over its larger mass. When you connect the battery to the wire first, then touch the steel wool, you are making solid contact with the steel wool and your hand makes sure that the wire stays in contact. The current continues to flow and the wool heats up. When you connect the wire to the steel wool first, as soon as you connect the battery the current melts that tiny bit of steel wool touching the wire and electrical contact is lost. The current stops flowing. No fire. If you want to connect the wire first and not have to hold it, you have to make sure that the current keeps flowing, perhaps by using a braided copper wire and spreading out the individual strands to make multiple contacts. Either that, or remove the insulation from a longer section of the wire and make sure that the entire un-insulated part of the wire is in contact with the steel wool. Maybe even weigh it down. Remember that any strands of steel wool touching that wire will melt as soon as the current starts, so you have to make sure that the wire will maintain contact somehow, the same way that your hand pushes the wire against it.
Q:Are Black Steel and Black Iron the same?
black steel and black tron are not same.
Q:Cast iron Vs. Stainless steel?
For strength, cast iron (that's why OEM exhaust manifolds are made out of it). For performance, stainless steel. For one, stainless steel headers are lighter than cast iron ones. Then they come in multiple arrangements, (4-2-1 or 4-1 for 4 cylinder motors). The down fall is strength. Hit a pot hole with the collector of a stainless steel header. It's going to have a nice dent in it.
Q:working load of steel anchor ?
oo that's a tough one. dont remember... just finished that class...sorry
Q:Steel vs nylon (elasticity/stress/strain)?
steel is NOT as flexible and much slipperier if you fall the nylon stretches to slow the victim but a steel cable would stop short and kill you
Q:What minerals are mixed to make steel?
It depends on the type of steel that you want. For example- A cold drawn carbon steel spring wire consists of Carbon,Silicon,Manganese, sulphur potassium. If you want to make an alloy steel you can also add chrome, vanadium , nickel etc. It depends on the combinations and percentages of each used.
