Q:Our guestroom has some old carpeting that we want to replace with new carpeting. I am about to rip out the carpet and padding and am wondering whether I need to remove all the old staples if I will just be laying carpet and padding over it again anyway. Thanks!

if you have children or walk around with bare feet it would be best to remove staples.a flat head screwdriver and pliers work very well..

Q:How do you remove paint from carpet?? It's a reasonably large spot of bright blue paint on cream carpet :S And it's been there for a while too... Any suggestions would be great!

Buy some Lift-off Paint Remover. (OKorder or wherever) It will make easy work of removing the paint. My son spilled a pint of bright blue paint on the front seat of one of our cars. He kind of mopped it up and let it dry. He let it bake in the summer sun for a couple of weeks before I noticed it. A year later, I was going to sell the car so I tried to find a matching seat at the salvage yard, no luck. I decided to give the Lift-off a try. It took less then ten minutes and made a beach towel completely blue, but all the paint was gone. The Lift-off is non-toxic and very low odor.

Q:wax cleanup from rug

I have used an iron and a cloth to get wax out of the carpet before. Lay the clth over the area and then apply a warm iron to the cloth, Hold it in place for awhile and then remove it. If I remember correctly, I had to do it about 20 times to get all the wax removed, but it worked.

Q:I noticed that my carpet has holes in it. there are tiny areas where the carpet strands are gone/eaten/disappeared/burned/etc and i don't know what it is. Also, around the area it is black or has black stuff left on the carpet (light brown carpet color). Any ideas as to what it is? How to stop it? Fix it? [also the only pets i have are fish]

there's a few things that live in carpets or breed there. but moths are the ones that are famous for holes. the larvae eat the rug then become moths. If you're lucky a little flea spray and the worms will come up so you can see them. start using boric acid or diatomaceous earth (buy the kind for this use not the pool filter material). sprinkle on carpet and brush deep with broom. Vacuum more regularly and put down more boric acid every few months at least.

Q:I am tiling then want to butt the carpet up against it. How do I do that?

All depends on what you needed for a substrate and how high the tile is and carpet type. If the tile was put on a 1/2 backer board. you ll have to double the carpet up by folding it up and back under itself. This is called a turn and tack. Some times a pad thickness ir enough. Occasionally you need 2 tack strips to get the carpet to cover the tile edge, If your over cement it will depend if the carpet is glued down or over a pad. Metals over the edge look tacky and cheap. Q:I bought a couple of area rugs I have recently moved them have found that the backing is leaving dull looking marks on the wood flooring. How do I remove the marks??

not sure what kind of marks you are referring too so check with a floor expert in your area before you do anything so you don't add to your problem . or resend in more details . after you get the floor problem resolved put a good grade rug pad under it . that will protect your floor from further damage

Q:We are replacing the carpet in two spare rooms with laminate flooring. What is the best way to get rid of the carpet?

Just pull it up. Start in a corner. You may need to grab it with pliers to get it started coming up. Most garbage collectors won't take a full sized roll of carpet. The last time I threw out carpet, I cut it into sections about 3 feet wide, rolled them up and wrapped them with tape. They took it that way.

an area rug is just that: ANY rug that is not laid down carpet, generally a rug that sits on top of another surface, often woods which shows around the edges. An oriental carpet is a very specific type of design. I would look at pictures as that is easier than trying to describe it. It is a type of area rug.
