- Q:Is it more affordable to buy your own carpet cleaning equipment and clean your own carpets or is it more affordable to hire someone from a carpet cleaning company?
- We purchased a Carpet Cleaner machine for about $100 and it works great! We decided to buy one because the rental and cleaner you have to buy, adds up! Then you are limited to the amount of time to do it yourself, which is usually cheaper than getting a professional. When we bought ours, we did one room a day until we were done, and we are still using the cleaner in the box! Next time we want or need to clean our carpets, we all ready have it! BUY ONE and do it yourself!!
- Q:We bought a new white linoleum floor to which we added a couple of bathroom rugs. When I went to pick up the rugs to throw them in the wash, I noticed the floor had yellowed underneath the rug. The stains were same shape of the rugs that covered it. The floor was meant to look like white marble now it looks like yucky yellow snow. How I can get these stains off? Will putting the rugs back down cause it to yellow once again? Shouldn't there be a warning lable on these rugs!

- Q:If you have an apartment with Pergo or hardwood floors in an older building that doesn't have a lot of insulation will rugs, curtains and the like help with reducing noise transmission to other units?
- Enormously. Just the addition of a few rugs and curtains will significantly deaden noise. If you want proof--go to your bathroom and remove all the rugs/shower curtains/window coverings you have in that space. Even if you don't have shower curtains (like a glass door, instead) remove everything you have on the counters or hangers--towels, etc. That hollow sound you hear in the bathroom, it happens all over your house, its just in larger areas so you don't notice it with all your furniture and things there. If you put a rug over a hardwood floor, It will definitely help to deaden the sound of footsteps to the neighbours below. Curtains/ bamboo shades/ etc., even light ones, will both make a significant difference to the sound that escapes your house and comes from other people outside AND to the coolness or warmth within your home.
- Q:I am planning to rent Rug Doctor Pro from home depot. It says its a carpet cleaner. Someone told it's not steam cleaning. Whats the difference ? Should I just go with the carpet cleaning ?
- Rug Dr is cold or cool water extraction. Steam cleaning is hot water extraction. That means the spray hitting the carpet is at least 190°. The only way you can steam clean is with a truck mounted hot water extractor. I have a $2000 carpet extractor with a built in 2000 watt heater. Technically, this is still not hot water extraction. I put water in at 135° the heater by using a 1000 watt pre-heater, depending on how fast I work heats the water to 160-175°, this is merely cool. This whole rig requires 3 outlets on 3 circuits. Since that is often not possible, I run 2-3 circuits off a generator. I like to run the pre-heater off the buildings power whenever possible. Do not rent a Rug Dr. or any other machine. They put down too much water and then don't suck it back up. If you buy a little Hoover, you might put down 2 gallons and recover 1 gallon in your home. The Rug Dr is going to put down about 4 gallons and recover 2, so your choice is dirty or wet. I typically put down 12 gallons and recover 10-10.5 gallons. Your carpet will be cleaner and dryer. A truck mounted machine might put down 24 gallons and recover 23 gallons. That is your best bet. Some carpet cleaners use other methods besides hot, cool or cold water extraction. Rug Dr and any home machine is considered cold water extraction. It is unlikely you'd be using water any hotter than 115-120°, which for carpet cleaning is cold. Anything other than hot or cool water extraction voids your carpet's warranty. Those other methods are really only appropriate for loop pile, glued down, no pad, commercial carpet, not cut pile residential carpet and tackless strips and with padding.

- Believe it or not... Oxy Clean (Powder Form). BEFORE YOU FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS, TEST A SMALL SPOT IN A CLOSET TO MAKE SURE THE COLOR IS NOT AFFECTED IN YOUR CARPETING (you did not mention what color your carpet was). Use a small bowl with about 1/2 scoop and cold water in the bowl. Keep mixing until it is dissolved. Actually pour enough on the stain to actually soak it and rub lightly with a toothbrush. Leave it alone for about 1 hour. After that, start blotting it up with paper towels. Repeat if necessary. PS: My home is carpeted throughout with white carpet, so I have had some experience with stains.

- Yes, it will change the colour. Also, it 's not safe for your dogs. BTW - Why do you have carpet in your backyard? Shouldn't you have grass like normal people?

- shampoo the rug with a steam cleaner and purchase another rug to set on top of it this will prevent a heavy traffic area from getting dirty, from time to time remove it and wash it or shampoo it replace it when fully dried.

- Are they vacuumed regularly? You can take throw rugs to the laundrymat and wash them in those huge washers. If they're old and antique-like, the kind with fringe or the braided type they may have to be professionally cleaned, and yes, there are specific places that do it. (do any of the rugs have labels on the back with any kind of instructions??) Maybe your grandparents can't afford it or aren't physically able to do this. It's good of you to try and figure out how to do this for them. If you're talking about carpeting, like wall to wall, then the rented carpet cleaner is an option.
