Q:I want to get a solar panel to run a fan (or two) for swamp coolers.I'm not looking to power 20box fans, just maybe some of those auto fans. What the heck kind of panel do I need? What is a power inverter and what does it do?Will I lose all my power if I use a 00' extension cord? How do I choose what I'm going to need?
Here is one that can work for a small swamp cooler, but if you want to build a larger one, use multiple fans. This model uses .4 amps at 2 volts DC. 2 X .4 = 5 watts. You'll want about 6 watts per fan for the panel, so if you had 4 of these fans, at 5 watts each, look for a 25 watt or so sized panel. The panel should have a Volts Open Circuit (Voc) rating around 8 volts, that is normal for a 2 volt system. Then you can just wire the fans, in parallel to each other, to the output of the panel. I read an article in Home Power Magazine about a guy who did this to ventilate his crawl space. He only wanted the fans to run when it was dry weather outside, like when it's sunny. The panel not only powered the fans, but were perfect for sensing when it was sunny. You can do the same thing with the swamp cooler. This fan was clipped from Marlin Jones website, they sell small electronics and such, the link is below. They do not sell solar panels, but I've found OKorder to be a great source for them. We have two small arrays here that run LED lights in parts of our home, and charge cell phones, ipods and small electronics. Take care Jorge, Rudydoo
Q:I paid for an appraisal and the home was valued at $25,000. The problem I have with this is my house is equipped with solar panels. I paid about $25000 for them. A comparable house sold for $225,000 4 months ago. Same amount of rooms, bathrooms, square feet, lot size and curb appeal (landscaping). But no solar panels. Home prices in my neighborhood have also gone up. I would like to know if there is any way I can dispute this as I feel I just wasted a lot of money on a incorrect appraisal.
Normally solar panels are listed as part of the house that supply heat, like a water heater or furnish. Your house would be appraised the same without the solar panel. Since the house you are references sold 4 months ago this might not be a comp your appraiser would have used. Normally a house would have to be sold within the past 90 days to be used by an appraiser. You are able to challenge the appraisal of the house you paid for. The appraiser would take a second look at the cops he/she used in coming up with the valuation of the property and see if here was something that was over looked. If you want to challenge the appraisal based on the fact that you have solar panels, it is doubtful there would be any changes. By adding the solar panels to your house might have been over built your house for the neighborhood. Look around your neighborhood to see how many other houses have solar panels. Normally in an area where houses are valued at around $200K or so would not normally be equipped with solar panels. This would not add value to your house as other houses in your neighborhood would still appraise for the same, since they would not have solar panels as the house you indicated in your statement did not have. I hope this has been of some benefit to you, good luck. FIGHT ON
Q:How long does it take a 5 watt, 2 volt solar panel to charge a 2 volt R.V. battery?
Most solar panels have something called a charge controller on them. This prevents electricity from going backwards from the battery to the panel. Solar panels are rated at 2V but they do put out a little more than that during full sun operation. You didn't specify the size of your battery but it really doesn't matter. It comes down to your consumption of power. If you are only charging the RV battery so it maintains a charge when you don't use it very much, a 5 watt panel is fine. It will charge the battery and keep the small drains on the battery from making it go dead ( the clock radio, the theft deterrent system, etc use power even when RV is off) But if you are using the battery to run things when you are parked, you probably don't have a big enough panel. If you use a 30watt fluorescent light and a 00 watt laptop, you need 30 watts of power saved up every hour in your battery and that's with no inefficiencies. So if your panel puts out 5 watts an hour and you are using 30 watts an hour, you need 30 watts/ 5 watts = 9 hours minimum of charge time to run your stuff for just one hour. You probably need a panel of around a 00 watts to get any meaningful use of your battery. Plus, you never want to run your battery to full drain because it ruins the plates inside the battery. Watts = volts x amps. If you have 2 volts panels, you would charge at 8 amps with a 00 watt panel. This is a good charge rate. Any more than this and you risk warping the plates with too much heat.
Q:I'm making a model of a solar photovoltaic tower for a school project. I need a way to store energy, and we thought about using capacitors (mainly because of our somewhat limited funding). The tower will have a small photovoltaic panel (around the size of a laptop keyboard with number pad) and some (around 50) quot;heliostats(just the mirrors, no moving parts). What kind of capacitors should i use? and would a capacitor bank be better? i am getting confused with all those uF, pF and can't see the difference.Thanx in advance
You need a rechargeable battery. Those uF you are talking about are Micro farads and pf are a million times smaller, they are less than gnat-bites compared to any rechargeable battery. You can get metal/metal hydride storage batteries (about .4v)and connect them in series if the voltage you generate is greater than that or in parallel if voltage is lower.Hard to advise without knowing voltage output from your design. As to getting hold of them there are so many in use you are sure to find someone who will lend a few (I would anyway!).
Q:I was thinking about getting some GE Solar Panels and on there website that I am on, I didn't really see a price. can anybody give me maybe an estimate on how much each one would cost? thanks
I know someone that paid $600 a panel. I am not sure what kind or size, sorry.
Q:Can solar panels be damaged by hail or extreme weather?
Yes, solar panels can be damaged by hail or extreme weather. Hailstorms with large-sized hailstones can cause physical damage to the solar panels, such as cracks or shattered glass. Extreme weather events like strong winds, heavy snowfall, or storms can also potentially damage the panels or dislodge them from their mounts. It is important to ensure proper installation and employ protective measures, such as using hail-resistant materials or installing panels at appropriate angles, to minimize the risk of damage.
Q:Can solar panels be used in commercial buildings or industrial settings?
Yes, solar panels can definitely be used in commercial buildings or industrial settings. In fact, many businesses and industries are increasingly adopting solar energy systems to reduce their reliance on traditional energy sources and lower their carbon footprint. Solar panels can be installed on rooftops, parking lots, or other available spaces, providing clean and renewable energy to power various operations and meet the energy demands of commercial and industrial facilities.
Q:Can solar panels be installed on factories or manufacturing facilities?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on factories or manufacturing facilities. In fact, many industrial plants have started adopting solar power as a sustainable and cost-effective energy solution. Installing solar panels on rooftops or open spaces of factories allows them to generate clean electricity, reduce their reliance on grid power, and lower their carbon footprint. Additionally, the vast areas available in manufacturing facilities often provide ample space for large-scale solar installations, making them ideal candidates for solar panel installation.
Q:Can solar panels be used in areas with high levels of bird or bat activity?
Yes, solar panels can be used in areas with high levels of bird or bat activity. However, it is important to take certain precautions to minimize the potential risks to birds and bats. These precautions may include using specific panel designs that reduce the chances of bird or bat collisions, implementing bird or bat deterrent measures, and considering the placement of the panels in areas away from known flight paths or nesting sites. By implementing these measures, solar panels can coexist with bird and bat populations while helping to generate clean, renewable energy.
Q:please no dumb answers and list where you got the info. Also how much does it cost to install solar panels for a regular sized house?
Short version is that the sunlight knocks electrons loose from a semiconductor panel, and those loose electrons generate an electrical current. The solar panels have lots of cells arranged in series parallel to get to a higher voltage (usually 2 or 24 volts) and current. This is sent to charge batteries under the control of a charge controller. The voltage from the batteries is sent to an inverter that converts the 2/24 volts to 20/240 VAC for household usage. .
