Q:what materials would you use and how would you construct solar panels enough to run a household?
If you think that a solar storm is going to knock out most power utilities in that time, what makes you think that your solar panels will not be affected as well? The cost to even come close to light up half your house will be prohibitive and will take at least a decade or 2 to just break even on your original costs. May want to do a little more research on your 202 storms. If you are concerned about the power going out for a while, then you better check at what else may happen.
Q:SOLAR Panels?
$8,000 invested at 5% interest would pay you $900 per year for the rest of your life. If you spend $40 per month and would save 25% of that, you would save $420 per year. To be fair, the savings would creep up with the electric rates but this would be off-set by maintenance cost and equipment attrition.
Q:projects using solar panels?
I have done this in my project too and a solar panel, two wires, a circuit/project board, an LED light/a small fan,a switch and a solderer. Just solder the wires to the positive and negative parts of the panel, put the wires connected to the panel to the board put the LED's on the other side and the switch together with it shine light on the panel and the light/fan will work.(If it dosen't work, please DO NOT consult ME.)
Q:Can pluto recieve energy from solar panels?
Not really. Solar panels operate by sunlight knocking electrons off atoms, and there has to be a particular minimum of light in order to maintain a steady stream of electricity. Beyond Mars, we equip our probes with batteries and generators - because the sunlight at that distance is too weak to generate the electricity needed - so... no. Solar panels on Pluto won't charge anything....
Q:Does anyone know a company that will make custom solar panels?
There's no way that home built system that will generate enough power to run your home off the grid. That's all hogwash! No wind = no electricity generated. No sun = no electricity generated. I'm looking into a grid tie solar system. I'm still working out the math for my home. They are expensive ($20k - $50k) before tax credits, but they have been designed by engineers, not back yard, shade tree wanna-be engineers. They will put power into the grid during the day (making your meter run backwards) and you'll draw the power back at night (when there's no sun). This is perfectly legal. It must be installed by power company approved techs. That's how power companies are going to meet their green energy mandates for the future. You'll generate power for the power company and get paid wholesale prices for it (during the day). But you'll buy it back at retail (at night)
Q:Buying Solar Panels...?
Are you aware of the complications that go along with installing a solar system? A solar panel might put out about 00 watts at 24 volts DC. What would you use it for. The typical solar system has a lot of panels connected in series. The output is connected to an inverter to make 20-240 volts AC. This is connected to the power grid if it is to be used. Also if it is felt that the system should provide power during an electrical outage, there will be batteries. How big would you wan it to be? Mine has forty panels with two inverters. It supplies all the electricity for the house, with some left over to supplement my gas heat. Read the Q and A in the Search box at the upper right of this page, by searching for solar panel. Also study all you can get your hands on.
Q:Homemade Solar Panels?
Hey David, yes, we have built plenty of them. If you are into the do it yourself world, the easiest type to build is the Batch Preheater type. What you need is an old water heater, something small, like an under counter model, 0 to 30 gallons in size. It has to be one that hasn't rusted out yet and started leaking. We stopped at a local plumbing place in town, they are always throwing out units they have removed from homes because the new owner wants a larger unit, or gas versus electric, and so on. He sold us a pretty recent model for $0. Take the water heater home, and strip off the outer metal housing and all the insualtion so all you have left is the tank. Clean it up, and paint it with black paint. Now build a wood enclosure, something the size of a dog house that your tank will fit inside of. Use a glass panel for one side of the roof. What works best is an old window pane someone is throwing out that is about the right size, then build your dog house to fit it. When it's done, put some styrofoam insulation panels around the back and side walls to keep the heat in when the sun shines on it, then mount your tank inside. Put your dog house someplace in the sun, run the cold water that normally feeds into your water heater into the tank (in the cold inlet side), then run a pipe from the outlet of the tank to your regular water heater. We have one just like this installed in the northern midwest, it works great about 7 months of the year. Usually in the summer if it's about 75 degrees outside, the water comes into the house at around 00 degrees, then the regular water heater only needs to add another 25 degrees to the water to finish it off. Since the water starts out at about 56 degrees, the solar preheater ends up doing about 65% of the work. In the winter, we simply drain the tank and lines to and from it, and route the cold water directly to the regular water heater. There are some designs on line, try googling, Batch Water Preheater. Q:WHAT ARE THE SOLAR PANELS ON POWER POLES?
Usually they are used to power monitoring units that transmit data to a central point on usage and/or line loads. They may also be used to supply power to some control circuits, and to allow remote control of these units. (If there was no power in the line, how else could you supply the needed power to obtain information and/or control these things remotely.) What they do is keep a standby or backup battery charged to operate the equipment. They are also used for self-powered lights in many areas, charging batteries during the day to run the light(s) at night. Similar systems are used on monitoring wells to transmit water table data. (Faster, cheaper, and more timely than sending someone around to make checks and read equipment once every couple of months.)
Q:Solar Panels, anyone?
Unless you live in an area with a very high UV index, like Las Vegas for example, solar panels are not cost-effective. You definatly should not attempt to install solar power yourself if you intend to power a residence with it (unless you live in a shack). A certified electrician is required in order to connect your equipment to your house's electrical system. It isnt just as simple as a few panels. You need a converter that turns the DC voltage generated into AC. You also need equipment to connect to the metering system for your house. If you want to see if it is cost effective, you will need your electric bills that show usage for a year and the price per kWH. There are a lot of websites that have calculators for solar power systems.
