Q:I plan to tile my bathroom. Can i tile over the existing tiles?
If your tiles are clean and tightly bound to what ever they are bonded to, yes it can be done with special adhesives and longer drying times. Its always best to start anew. Ripping out the old and starting over but not always possible. You ll need the proper thin set, correct size trowels for the tile being layed, buckets, tile cutters such as a wet saw and hand cutter. Grout floats, wax rings ,saws to cut doors down since they may not clear after. If you ve never tiled before, maybe you should hire it done, this isn t a beginner type job, but if you want to try, I ll help guide you. Basic skills in construction and plumbing wil come in handy. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q:what is the thickness of vitrified tile?
It will vary from any tile that is vitrified ...A vitrified tile is all in the body hardness and is more of a rating . Since it s based an water absorbtion and not a thickness.. You ll find many brands and styles of vitrified tile. These lean more towards your porcelains rather than the normal clay bodied tile. It s all in the making/ firing process than any thing else. So you ll have to check specs on the brands and type you have in India.Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there ... GL
Q:Tiling a kitchen back splash?
You said textured. Is that textured paint or lumpy texture . If lumpy texturing, you have to get it smooth. Sand ,scrape or replace, just so its smooth to go over. No cement backer board required. This really isn t a wet area to really be concerned about.. Thinset or mastic will work fine. Thin set is a little harder to work with if your not all thatexperiencedd. But thin set is cheaper. If your using a self stacking tile its real easy. But if the tile your using requires spacers to hold it up until you set the spacer its a pia, but can be done. Mastic , w/ the right trowel , the tile will pretty much set and hold into place until you put a spacer in. Thin set will skim up and set up much quicker when using over dry wall .. The moisture will absorb into the dry wall just faster so you can t do as big an area at once..So when I do thin set over dry wall I make my thinset just a bit( just a bit) so that it ll set a bit longer. This takes practice and you need a bit ofexperiencee. . Now if your using some glass tiles you should use thin set.And they want you to use a special enhanced thin set.. Any questions you can e mail me thru my avatar and check my qualifications there GL
Q:ceramic tile vs. vinyl tile?
vinyl tile would be a lot cheaper..off the top of my head and if the place is empty and the floor that the vinyl tile is going over is in good shape, you are probably looking at around 800 dollars........ceramic maybe 3 to 4 thousand......these figures are far from exact but the vinyl tiles could probably be finished in a day, whereas, the ceramic could take 4 to 5 days in all.........
Q:ceramic tiles?
some tiles just don't have a shiny glazing. if the tile has a texture to it, then really that's all the shine it will have. if you have a piece that wasn't set, just extra, compare it to the set tile. the set tile should have the same shiny glaze as the extra piece. if the extra piece is shiner then there is a bit of a haze on the tile from grout residue. contact the manufacturer if possible and ask for cleaning suggestions. if not possible, start with a bit of vinegar in water and elbow grease.
Q:how do i renovate old bakelite tiles?
The one thing you do not want to do is use any harsh or abrasive cleanser on them. If they are real bakelite then they can lose their gloss and can be ruined. First try a bit of liquid laundry soap and warm water on a terry washcloth or small towel and dab or blot it on the spots. As the warm water and soap sit on the paint it will soften enough to scrape off with your fingernail or a popsicle stick. Always try any cleaning on a tile that is not seen readily, like under the sink if available, to insure that the finish does not get damaged. I have never known tiles to be made of bakelite but plastic was used extensively up to the 1970's and it can be cleaned with mineral spirits if necessary. If the soap and water do not work try mineral spirits, (also known as paint thinner and/or turpentine) on a small area of the tiles. You can try the fingernail scraping method first and some of the paint may come off straight away if it is latex and not too thick. If you get all the paint off you can shine them with carnuba wax, but try the wax on a hidden tile to make sure it does not have a reaction with bakelite. Best of luck.
Q:Where can I get ceramic floor tiles to match what I have?
Try to remove one or part of one (you may end up cracking another one though). Take it to a large tile store with experienced trained experts. Beware though - even if you do find the exact tile, it may not match exactly due to dye lots just plain aging of the current tiles. The current tile may not have been installed properly with hardibacker if there's a lot of cracking, or the tile itself may not have been the best quality, or they were cracked during moving of heavy appliances - a few possible scenarios of why these tiles cracked. SOMETIMES tile can be repaired, but it usually doesn't last long, especially if the cause was poor installation or the floor heaved for some reason.
Q:Paint tiles!!!?
Painted tiles will never look as good as the original finish and will probably not wear well either, since there is white in your countertop, I would just leave the tiles as they are. You could remove some of the tiles and put in accent tiles that match your new color scheme to help pull it all together. The sell the grout knives and cutter you would need at the tile section of your larger hardware stores. Tape the surrounding tiles to avoid scratching when removing one.
Q:Can floor tile be reused?
Yes it can be re-used, and thin set, or latex based mortars can be removed,,,with caution. I'm doing remediations constantly at one job site in a building prone to flooding. I have an ongoing part time career with 11,000 sq. ft. of tile. The tile used 2 years ago is no longer in stock, but continues to POP due to ground level water seepage. I use a Diag. Grinder, with a tile cutting blade, cut out grout, lift the tile, flip it, grind down the thinset to a reasonable level, and re-install. The bad news is the job is tedious. The good news is that the job is tedious,,, smiles. It saves the current floor however. Certainly, aside from safety precautions one might expect, the tile is fragile as well, and unless you have more, than you will use in this purchase which I always manage anyway, on a job site, by no less than 10% for waste, etc, You may find that treating the old tile as if it was a fresh egg is your best way to proceed. Q:Question about Pre-Mixed Tile Grout?
Sealer, sealer, sealer... It's like the magic solution for everything now. The most important thing about what you are doing is the adhesive for the tile. Make sure it can handle the water. And spread it thick... let the tile squeeze it out and wipe out the excess. You cannot have air bubbles under the tile. The steam will expand the air in that bubble (1,000 times it's cold volume) and pop the tiles. As for grouting between the joints: consider using caulk instead. You can specially order (at the hardware store) tinted and colored caulks. In a shower, there is no better solution. I bought a grout remover tool and took out the grout in my tile shower then installed a light sand colored caulk 15 years ago. I never sealed the glazed tile and it still looks good.
