Q:I will be doing my first tile job soon. I will be removing/replacing the tile on my kitchen countertop. I have got most everything figured out with the exception of removing the existing tile on the backsplash. I believe the tile was placed directly over sheet rock (tract home). Any suggestions on how to remove the tile without too much damage to the sheetrock. If I have to do sheetrock replacement I don‘t think I could ever duplicate the texture now applied to the surronding sheet rock Thanks for any tips.
Carefully remove any molding/cut any caulk between the tile and sheet rock using a razor blade knife. Remove the tile from the counter top then start working (prying) from the back splash tile bottoms using a wonder bar - oftentimes they'll pretty much pop right off. If you pry from the tile sides against the sheet rock, use a wood block under the pry bar to avoiding making indentations in/breaking thru the rock. Best to not get in a hurry. Never hurts to have a hammer and safety glasses near just in case. Have you considered extending the new back splash up to the cabinets above? Just guessing at the layout...
Q:For a while now I have just used paper towels as a substrate for my 2 leopard geckos and I recently have been researching slate tiles as a substrate and I want to give it a try due to the positive feedback i‘ve seen on message boards and care sheets. Now, I have 2 10 gallon tanks that I would like to use but details are lacking from an online source.1. What measurements should i ask for when getting a piece of slate cut(for a generic 10 gallon tank)?2. Is there a certain thickness the slate should be for proper heat disbursement?3. How warm should the slate be allowed to get if i‘m monitoring it with a thermometer? I know I could measure out the tank myself, but I was just curious if there was a size that fit better than what a measurement would give me. Thank you for the feedback.
whats up, the final substrate to apply for person leopard geckos is youngster's play sand. in case you have a youthful gecko, it extremely is ultimate to place those on paper towel to dodge impaction, till they're approx. 6 inches long. Impaction skill that the gecko has eaten the substrate and can't bypass it - inflicting ailment! a lot of hides could be placed via the viv and counting on what number geckos are housed jointly, a minimum of a million humidity cover. good success.
Q:Ok we are remodeling our kitchen and have the area between the counter tops and the bottom of the upper cabinets that is currently some ugly green tiles. Very small ones at that. We do not want the hassle to remove these and try to replace with something more attractive. We are looking for solutions to just cover the tiles with something d-i-y and not too expensive. I have seen a lot of peel and stick stuff but don't know if it can be used on tiles. Please give suggestions!
In the end, you will not be happy with anything less than removing the tiles, repairing the wall, and installing a tile back splash you like. Anything else would not be appealing, nor would it last. This could easily be a weekend project and is well worth the effort, if not just for the resale value.
Q:We are using some leftover floor tile (6x6 size) and some new decorative tile (2x2 and 1x1) to tile our backsplash. Can we use the same mortar that we used on the floor? Also, we used a 1/4 inch notched trowel when doing the floor -- should we use a smaller notch for the backsplash (say, a 1/8 inch notched trowel)? Finally, the floor tile and the 1x1 tiles are porcelain. The 2x2 tile is tumbled travertine with quite a few pits on the surface. We don‘t know if we should fill those pits with grout or not. On one hand -- it will make the tiles easier to clean if they are filled (yes?). On the other, we like the look of the pits and don‘t know if we want the grout (which is a slightly darker color) filling the pits. Any suggestions?
After installing thousands of sq. ft. of tile, and getting many thumbs down here?? I offer my thoughts. On a personal note, I don't come here to boost ego or income. DO NOT grout the texture of the travertine just to fill it. First of all the texture of the grout will be different than the tile, NOT likely remain in the smallness of the PITS, and unless it's in a color that matches; will stand out as it it was NEON. I use both sized knives to trowel mortar, in your case 1/8 will be fine. Since any tile should be regularly cleaned,,,given the surfaces they cover,,, I suspect the difference in tiles and textures is interesting and the PITS wherever else they exist must have the same issue? Yes? I might not attempt it, but as a DIY, for your own home, it's not a horrible idea, and certainly can be changed at some point. I guess in the end however I'm most curious about why not save the 6x6 for possible repair/replacements? Also I'm curious about WHY the NEW/Different? Is it in use elsewhere in the house? Is it different, in general, than the horizontal surface it will BUTT against? Finally and with no offense meant,,,Why 6x6 on a floor? Is it a bathroom? Finally, finally,,, DON'T bother to use a sealer that might make you think the Travertine will clean easier. It will only cause an issue of occasionally having to re-apply sealer. Steven Wolf
Q:Real tile or those that u just glue on?? why?
There are some nice vinyl self-adhesive tiles out there, and for about a dollar a square foot, it's hard to go wrong. Just do good prep work to make sure it's beautiful and long-lasting. Ceramic tile takes a lot of work. Additionally, you may need backer board for either type of floorcovering if there are any imperfections in your existing subfloor, and the combined thickness of the board, mud, and ceramic tile quickly adds up to a taller floor that can cause stubbed toes when transitioning off carpet areas. Bottoms of doors can begin to drag the floor too. Good luck and happy scraping.
Q:I had a person re-grout the 4 tiles years ago. That person was a dufus and left some grout on the tiles instead of just in the grooves.. It is still there! How could I remove the small patches of grout from the front of the white tiles? As a point of information, the repair guy messed up by grouting ALL of the tiles when he first started. The grout drys so fast that it set up hard before it could be struck and finished and the excess washed off. The tile setter guy is supposed to do just a very few tiles at a time.
Hopefully, all of your tiles have grout AND sealer. You can try plain ol' scrapping it off, but be careful not to scratch the tiles. Try using white vinegar to soften the grout, but be sure not to get any on the grout that you want to save. Use a small sponge, or even Q-tips. You may have to let it soak a few minutes. Also, try using a plastic scraper instead of a metal one, like a pan scraper. If you have any spare tiles, practice scraping to see if you're scratching the tile.
Q:Decoration living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom with what kind of tiles good?
Four bedroom tiles color: If it is children, you can use grass green, Tianlan, if it is adult couples living, the color can be fresh and elegant, pink tone can enhance the warm and romantic, if it is older parents, the body is not very good, should not choose warm colors, easy to cause Unsettled, you can use milky white and so on. Simple type of bedroom can choose black and white with; European-style optional light brown or rain forest brown. If the room is light enough to choose a little warm color, if the light is not enough, choose the color light and bright, the bedroom generally choose partial yellow or pink, relatively soft warm, people relaxed and comfortable. Fifth, the choice of tiles with color. 1. Beige series of tiles, so that the room has a magnificent noble and elegant; 2. stone color is both ancient and natural, but also appears thick and rich connotation; 3. earth color and terracotta series of tiles in the living room and the restaurant floor, can make people feel the pastoral style of pleasure and comfort; 4. blue and green series, it is easy to think of the sky's vast and grassland natural wind Xing; 5. Red series of tiles, so that the ground looks very special, there is a gorgeous feeling; 6. Gray series, more cultural taste and natural scenery; 7. Black and white series with each other, can increase the level of the structure of the ground; 8. Plain, white, gray and other light is simple, suitable for poor lighting room paving; 9. Black, red, yellow and other dark is heavy, suitable for better lighting room paving; 10. Warm tones of the ground floor can make the room to produce a warm atmosphere, and cool colors of the wall, then people feel a cool and cool from the ocean.
Q:I want to install Travertine tile to a fireplace surround. This would be travertine tile directly to sheetrock, painted with flat latex paint. This areawould never see moisture other than something the wet grout and sealer. Is this OK? Will the sheetrock hold the weight of the tiles? What prep is needed? Or am I asking for trouble?
Directly to the wall in your situation will work fine. You are better off using a thin set ( latex or a latex modified the bag will say) I ve done 100 s of FP s this way I would use a metal edging on the inside of the surround rather than a caulk or grout, since both will look bad shortly from the metal on the fire chamber will expand and contract. Don t forget to seal the stone at least once before installation ( I do all mine twice before installation ) This so you don t stain it w/ glues, thin sets or grouting. I still strongly suggest a thin set.. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there.. GL
Q:How can I remove ceramic tiles from a bathroom wall without damage the wall itself, as I want to paint the wall. Would steam help loosen the glue used?
