Q:i want to use broken tiles for flooring in the balcony. what is the procedure?? and how do i start??please suggest.
I suggest that you first prep and fill your concrete and let dry. Next you should lay out some tile pieces on an area near your starting point fitting the pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle. Next spread some tile mastic over an area equal to the size of the area where you have laid out tile pieces that fit together. Next, quickly set the tiles in the mastic in the same pattern that you had them laid off to the side leaving at least about 1/8th gaps between the tile pieces. When you are finished, scrape off any mastic that does not have tile set in it. Repeat this process until you completely cover your floor. Allow to dry for a day and then fill the cracks with grout. Allow the grout to dry for a day and then do an acid wash to remove the grout residue.
Q:im making this really cool projecr for my moms birthdayy and i need a few tiles. plain tiles. where can i get them individually and cheap? ‘ how much will it cost? (per tile)
Most tiles are sold by the square foot,(s/f). But most places like Home Depot and Lowes will sell the small tiles , like the 4 inch tile per piece. I ve seen them as low as 8 cents a pc for basic white and cream ( bone colored) . Matte and high gloss both. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
Q:Do you think that it will be dangerous to my children if I put tile throughout my whole home... Falls etc. Thanks for the advice for those who have experience with this! :)
I had tile in a mudroom and foyer and kitchen in couple homes last of which I had my babies grow in. They never once fell on it and they lived from ages newborn and up to 6 yrs. There is also a No Run in house policy for us too. They learned to be careful naturally I guess. I do whatever I want and children adapt just fine. The only problem was if ever glass fell and shattered which luckily never happened. I am again trying to decide on a current house on what to do in Kitchen - and leaning toward tile again. Some tiles aren't slipperly at all because they are almost gritty with a non slip surface.
Q:Suggestions and stories needed. We have 3 kids, 2 dogs (inside). I am on the fence. We bought stuff for doing the tile but now I am thinking laminate.
If you do choose tile, I would recommend having very tight, close and narrow grout lines. I speak from experience: In an home I used to own, I had 12 black and white tile in the kitchen, installed on the diagonal. It looked great, until the grout lines began to get stained from general wear and tear. Yes, the grout was sealed, but it still stained over the next 5 years. If I had it to do again, I would still get the tile, but have the installer place the tiles VERY close together so you don't have such a wide grout line to try to keep clean. Hope this helps! :)
Q:we are planning on replacing our livingroom carpet, !/2 of it withceramic tile. Is there any do‘s and don‘ts to consider. Thanks.
With all due respect and not knowing at all your DESIGN, certainly I have suugestions. After installing thousands of sq. ft of tile, and various other flooring I ask that you e mail me. The tile installed may be at some similar level to the tile but needs transition molding, and again without knowing the design; is to to be a DECO thing or a simple carpet butted to tile as in half a space? The installation process isn't so difficult even for a DY, but there are things to consider, I offer all the help, through my experience, I can offer in emailing me... even if I'm not BEST. Q:We have a hardwood floor in our bathroom, and because it gets too damp, we want to install vinyl tiles on top of the hardwood floor. But I cannot imagine vinyl sticking to wood - can it be done successfully? Any glue tips??
If you do that you will STILL have a hardwood floor that will get damp, only it will be underneath vinyl tiles, and you might find problems in the future with buckling, swelling etc because the vinyl and wood will not shrink or expand at the same rate. Best just to take an extra day, remove the hardwood and start fresh
Q:hi we have old carpet on top of tiled floor in our dining room the carpet really needs replacing but I have no idea how to fix the grippers down onto the tilesany ideas how I can do this without pulling up the tiles?
I will have to assume you are talking about vinyl tile?? I can't imagine laying carpet over ceramic tiles!!! If your old carpet was wall-to-wall, all you need to do is untangle the old carpet from the needle-like protrusions located next to each wall. You can then lay new wall-to-wall carpet over the old tiles and connect it to the protrusions just like the old carpet was. If you are opting for an area rug, you will need to remove the old tacked-down carpet holders around the perimeter and repair or replace the vinyl tiles that now have holes in them.
Q:Has anyone ever used the spray glaze you can use to paint ceramic tile? I have some ugly green tile on the walls in my bathroom, and I don‘t want to get into busting it out. I saw it used on HGTV, but I want to know if any REAL people have used it? If so, was it expensive? Easy to use? Did it run? I will take any other ideas anyone has for an inexpensive way to do something with this horrible green!
I have never seen a really successful do it your self reglazing job. It looks ok when it is first applied but will not hold up to normal use. it scratches or peels. also for tile it does not look natural because the grout gets painted as well as the tile
Q:Our house has Asbestos floor tiles throughout. (I had them tested, and they definitely contain asbestos.)The dilemma: Currently these tiles are covered with carpet. The carpet is old and ugly and needs to be replaced. We want to replace it with Laminate flooring.I‘m worried about pulling up the carpet tacks at the edges. Is there a safe way to do that? Also, is it safe to put Laminate flooring over asbestos tiles?
This probably isn't going to be cheap but you MUST get the asbestos out of the house asap. The only legal way is to employ a specialist firm to come in and remove it for you as they will have all the right equipment to remove it safely. They will also be licensed to take it away and dispose of it correctly. It's not just a matter of taking it to the local waste disposal site. If they're a reasonable company they may even take your old carpets away for you aswell because if they've been laid directly on top of the tiles there'll definitely be traces of asbestos in the carpets.
Q:the tile squares have come off and I need to re-stick them. Which glue should I use?
The thin floor tiles? Sometimes you can heat the tile back and floor with a hair drier then stick them back in place one by one. If that doesn't work then carry a tile to a flooring outlet and ask them what to use and do. There's different types of adhesives. Some can be re-activated with heat while others need to be removed then a fresh application trowled on.
