- Q:I am installing 4.5 x 4.5 porcelain tiles on a drywall kitchen backsplash. Applying Omnigrip mastic using a 1/4 x 3/16 vnotch trowel. The tiles have a waffle grid pattern on the back which is about 1/16 deep. I tested the application of one tile and noticed that the mastic did not fill all the waffle depressions. Are they supposed to be all filled? DO I have to backbutter the tiles? Am I using the correct trowel size? Please help!P.S. What is the purpose of the waffle pattern in the first place?

- I would wait 24 hours before grouting especially if it is cool in the room. You can try to grout it sooner but you risk moving the tiles although 4 x 4 tiles usually touch each other and therefore don't move too much. For large areas it is always faster and neater to apply the adhesive to the wall and it is applied more evenly.

- I would use a minimum of 1/2 inch cement board. How large are your joists are you sure you will not have any weight issues (you should be OK). Next try to jump up and down once in the middle of your floor, this will give you an idea of the flex you have in your floor. Too much and your tile will end up cracking. If you have too much flex, consider installing a floating floor instead, they make some that look just like ceramic tile but are synthetic. They are lightweight and will last almost as long as the tile would have. As far as your dishwasher is concerned, see how much adjustment is on your legs (the legs screw up and down- they are used to level the dishwasher). It is not always necessary to tile under the dishwasher, but you want to make sure you can still get it out in the future, they don't last as long as your tile will. If you do choose to cover up the tiles with new tile, you will probably not have a problem, but if the home inspector finds you have the tiles underneath, you will have to disclose this to the buyer who may want money back from the sale to remove the tiles which they will never do since they are already covered. If you are going to remove the tiles, get a reputable asbestos abatement contractor who is going to do the job right and not put your health in jeopardy. This will cost you but then you will not have anything to worry about once it is gone.

- To go over tile I ve used both Flex Bond and VesaBond thinset made by Custom Building products, Both are usually sold at Home Depot.. One suggestion when tiling over tile, allow a few extra days drying time before any foot traffic on the new tile . Moisture has no where to go when doing this and extra drying time IS required. Do NOT add a latex additive if you use a polymer type thin set, only a latexed based thin set.. No sanding is generally needed, just a clean , oil and grease free tile. - Without seeing the floor plan that is hard. Draw your floor plan out carefully and make a tile grid that matches your drawing scale. If the grid is on tracing or clear acetate sheet you can lay it over your drawing. You want to keep as many straight lines through doors as you can and keep the edges against walls balanced at the same time. You can cheat the layout a little bit by using wider or narower grout line if it is ceramic tile. The fewer places you have less than a half tile against a wall the better it will work. remember that you will have some furniture, so exposed edges after furnishing matter a bit more than edges you will never see behind a couch.

- In constrution terms a square is 100 sq ft.But that's pretty much only used for roofs.I think what you need here is a measurement in square feet To get it just measure the floor both ways and multiply. I.e. If the room measures 10 Ft X 10 ft then you have 100 sq ft
