- Q:A week and a half a go I put eight 23 1/2‘‘ x 23 1/2 tiles on my sheetrock wall as a headboard and I can sometimes hear it crack! Will it fall?
- heck no! Ive seen tiles installed ritght onto sheet rock in wet arias as in bathroom shower! as far as the papper delamanating from the rock? hell no!!! ur good pal! If u hear cracking, Its not the tiles falling off. maybe the rock seperating from the studs, or the stus sressing out. think of it this way, when you go to hang a heany pic or mirror to the wall u usaly attach to the studs...what you could have done is reinforce the rock (add more screws) then did ur work. right now the rock should be attached with 1 1/4 screws at least with a nail pattern of 6 inch on perimiter and 12 inch in field. hope this info helps! - Q:I need to tile a kitchen back splash from counter to cabinets. Backerboard at the moment is drywall, textured and painted. I‘d like to hear some opinions on tiling directly over this or using cement backer board. Also thinset or mastic?
- Most thinsets are not recommended for drywall. They won't stick, but a latex modified thinset will. I would use the mastic. If you do go over the drywall it's a good idea to sand it lightly to remove any glossiness from the paint. You also need to degrease the wall. Backerboard is good but not really needed if the drywall is sound and flat.
- Q:2nd bathroom, rarely used. Not sure if I want to spend the time to remove the tile (200 sq ft) or just put a think underlayment over it and then laminate.Anything that I should be concerned with doing it this way?
- You don t say if its vinyl tile or ceramic tile. Vinyl tile the floor change is minimal and no problem. Doing it over a ceramic tile you may have a transition concern at the doorway. Other than raising the floor height, which I assume you realize, there is no concerns as long as the flooring down now is flat, solid and level, it ll be fine. - Q:We had to remove some tile and break out the wall behind our shower/bath wall in order to put in a new part for new fixtures. So, now we need to repair that portion of the wall (about 3‘x2‘) and re-tile it. Do we need to use greenboard (it looks like either that or just drywall was used originally) or cement board? Also, how do we join the new portion of backing to the old portion? When tiles are removed, they damage the old backing -- so I can‘t take off an extra row of tiles and then have that backer exposed in order to tape and put mortar over. Hubby says we can cut the backer to fit the opening, and then just go ahead and tile, and that the grout will effectively seam and waterproof those joints where the new backing meets the old tiled backing. Any suggestions?
- You want to use the concrete backer board for wherever you hang the tile. You need it to help support the weight of the tile on the wall. For the rest, it is probably a good idea to use the greenboard to resist the moisture. And actually, if you get a brand name faucet for your shower, you shouldn't ever have to break out the tile. Most of the bigger name faucet companies have it so the guts of the faucet valve can be pulled out without ever getting into the wall. Then since the back portion is pretty much generic for most of their faucet you should have a variety of new faucet styles that will fit over that valve. You just need to get the kit for the style you like. Just go to a store that specializes in plumbing or bathrooms.

- Q:Well I grouted my glass tile backsplash today and let it dry, now it is ready to be cleaned off, but i am completely exhausted! can i clean it off tomorrow or will it be too late? grout container said to let it dry for 4 hrs before cleaning off with a dry cloth. yeah right, a dry cloth does not do the trick. only a damp linen cloth used to scrub each individual little tile gets the haze and bits of left over grout off and that is going to literally take me all night. so can i do that tomorrow or do i need to pull an all nighter???
- no longer something is needed, in basic terms use a moist sponge and rinse frequently. once you have wiped each and all the surplus grout off the tiles, enable them to dry over night, then wipe down the tile with a delicate fabric (tub Towel) this would take off the haze on the tile. Then all this is left is to seal the grout.
