A3: Rattan is a member of the palm family and grows primarily in Southeast Asia. It is an anomaly to a tree. Where a tree grows from small to large and has growth rings, rattan has growth nodules for each season. It can grow up to 300 feet in height before it is harvested and sent to factories that produce the furniture. It is an extremely durable wood that can be easily bent to make the very unique styles that makes rattan furniture so special.

A4: Wicker is best described as anything that is woven. Natural wicker can be made from rattan or any wood type products that are small and easily woven. These are usually woven on rattan frame. He was angry about something and this idea came to mind as something he could do to get even with the world and not get found out till later. You need to have a talk with him not about the sofa in particular, but in destructive behavior in general. Perhaps give him chores to do and mark off a financial amount for each chore each time he does it until he has paid off at lease one-fourth of the cost of repairing or replacing the sofa. This will extend the punishment and re-remind him of what he did wrong and why it was wrong.

- yes, but don't expect it to last for the rest of your life. maybe about five to ten years, depending how rough it gets treated. the frame will not hold up like a more expensive couch, but it will look nice and be comfortable for several years. and at that price, why think of it as an heirloom?
