Q:How effective are solar panels?
Well, the maximum amount of energy you can receive with 00 percent efficiency is kilowatt per square meter. This is the energy that hits the Earth's surface. The best commercially available panels are 20-30 percent efficient. Cutting edge technology has gotten this percentage up to 50 percent, but you can't buy these for your home. If you're curious about efficiency, check out a panel's dimensions, find the area in square meters, and use that along with its Watts (divide by 000 to get kilowatts) to get your answer.
Q:Question about using solar panels......?
I don't think it is enough solar power. Your motor requires .5A x 9V = 3.5 watts. The solar cells are .450A x 4V x 2ea. = 3.6 watts, .2A x .5V = .3 watts, .A x 9V = .9 watts total solar = 4.8 watts. The problem with connecting the cells in series to get the right voltage, like the two 4V cells in series with the .5 volt cell (total 9.5 volts) is that the .5 volt cell limits the maximum current to only 0.2A. If you paralleled that with the 9V cell, you would get 9 volts at 0.2 + 0. = 0.3A, too low to operate the motor at its design current and voltage. The best you could do is put the two 4V cells in series, and in parallel with the 9V cell (a blocking diode might be a good idea, but probably not required for such a small array). That way you get 8 volts at 0.55 amps.
Q:how much do solar panels cost and r thay worth buying?
If you want to get money from the power company you will have to basically put in $0k to $20k worth of solar panels. Currently most solar panels that are available to home owners are not all that efficient. I currently have 3 that are 2 foot x 0 foot on my roof that follow the sun and they only power my water heater. Also some states will give you a tax rebate for installing solar power banks on your roof, mainly in the southwest.
Q:Why don't we use solar panels?
Good question. One of the reasons is the greed of manufacturing companies. No matter the profit margin of the product, they seem to want to charge so high a price that the break even point is ten years down the road, so the true savings are few. The cost of solar panels should have dropped way lower than they have by now. I believe that the political correctness of the product will tempt the manufacturers to keep the prices artificially high. One other answerer is right, the panels are very fragile, and damage would destroy the investment, so new inroads need to occur in technology to protect the panels from damage. Somewhere in the middle is a profit for the manufacturers, and savings for the consumer. I hope we find that middle-ground soon.

Long ago, say, in the 960's, it was true that solar cells did not return the energy of their manufacture. In those days, cells were 4% efficient, and made with more material and a less efficient process. Unfortunately, the myth persists that this is still the case today from unaccredited sources. Kudos to Michael for the nrel link. That study was actually done over 0 years ago, and since then, technology has advanced even further. Manufacturers have been able to reduce the thickness of cells in general in the last decade, to use less crystalline silicon. Also manufacturers such as Suntech with their pluto process are now able to use a lower grade of silicon, that takes less energy to refine. The result is that the energy payback time is even shorter today than estimated in the linked paper.
Q:Why only Photo-Voltaic solar panels?
Solar thermal systems aren't really that much cheaper. You have to have complex systems to pump the water, heat exchangers, regulate the temperature in the panels so it doesn't get too hot, regularly inspect it for leaks, have a system to maintain a constant output temperature, etc. The return on investment of such systems are usually very long, on the order of several decades, even for very large buildings. If they were cost competitive with traditional heaters then they would already be much more widely used I think. Plus with solar thermal you have the unfortunate reality that technologically they aren't going to get much more advanced. That's probably not the case for PV panels. So the only way I can really see solar thermal being used on a larger scale would be some kind of subsidy. PV on the other hand may have a breakthrough tomorrow that drastically reduces its cost. I'd be curious to find out how well those solar AC units actually work though, I can see how they might have potential.
