- Q:I have carpet in the living room, it's not a big room, average size. I have a BISSELL steam cleaner, the one with the bristles, and I can empty the tank 5 times and keep going over the room and it still comes up dirty (the water) Is this normal? It's not possible to clean it until the water comes up clean is it? This carpet is probably old, we moved in a year ago so I am not sure how old it is.
- Clean the best you can.. You d be absolutely shocked at the amount of dirt is under the carpet and pad even in the cleanest of houses.. I ve pulled up many carpet and the home owners are appalled at the amount of dirt that is under there. GL

- Probably hard to do if you're talking about an area rug. Scissors don't usually cut through rugs very well, even very good scissors. A utility knife doesn't do it very well either. And whatever you cut it with, the cut edges are going to fray. Better to move that rug back a bit and get something flatter for just inside the door.
- Q:My mother in law is trying to sell the home we currantly live in and needs to put new carpet in and I have heard mixed reviews about it.. I live in a townhouse and there isnt a lot of windows to vent air.. What should I do?
- We too are putting in new vinyl flooring and carpet during my Christmas break from work when I will be about 7 months pregnant. We did laminate in the living room, hall and master bedroom this summer when I was first pregnant and I painted our new master walk-in closet! I think I would be more concerned with the germs and filth lurking in the old carpet than anything from the new carpet! It's not a concern at all! Invisible - it really takes all kinds on here! Some people just can't handle a common sense answer! Edit - I forgot to mention, you may want to use the day the carpet is ripped up as an excuse to go to the spa or shop. Our carpet was ok when we ripped it up (obviously the first owner was an excellent housekeeper) BUT when they ripped up my brothers, there was literally inches of sediment from either dirt, powdered rug fresheners and who knows what else that was even through the underpad. That would not be good to inhale.

- A UTI could be the cause of your cat's missing the box in favor for the rug, or he could be upset about something. Have you moved his box? Changed his food? Changed his schedule? Anything that is different that might seem small to you might be big to him. My mom's cat started pooping on her rug because my mom moved her litter box. She solved the problem by purchasing Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract cat litter; it is specifically made for cats who fail to use the litter box. There is a booklet inside the package that discusses how to deal with this issue. Dr. Elsey emphasizes that scolding the cat could have the opposite effect that you intend - it could cause the cat to urinate outside the litter box more frequently. This litter and the suggestions worked for my mom's cat. You can find it at Petsmart and other large pet supply stores. Good luck.

- It'd help to know what exactly is in your carpet - do the hairs bother you or has it been peed on - or worse!? For hair, the best thing I've ever tried is scraping carpet with a rubber-soled shoe. Once you've done a bit the hair all clumps together and can be picked off by hand - not as much hassle as it sounds! For pee you'll have to wash it, which is a hassle without a proper wet vac. First check if any friends or family have one you can borrow, or if there are any companies nearby which will hire one out to you. If not, try using something like Shake 'n' Vac, which is a powder that you sprinkle on the carpet and then hoover off with a conventional vaccum cleaner. If you're still really desperate then you'll have to get a big bucket of warm soapy water, scrub it in with a big scrubbing brush, put a dry towel on it and stomp around on it to pull as much of the water back out of it as you can, then wait a very long time for it to dry out again completely. This is a massive pain in the a*se though, so try the other methods first and maybe stick to just washing any really bad bits with water if you have to!

- Q:i have a little dog and i'm still training her so i have a carpet cleaner spray i use on her areas that she had an accident on. Well anyway she did her thing inside instead of outside and i grabbed the tilex tile cleaner with bleach instead of the carpet cleaner and now my carpet is bleached in 2 areas! I am moving apartments in a month and i am afraid i wont get my deposit back. Is there any carpet dye or somthing i could do???
- Dying bleach stains in a carpet can be done, but that is something usually best left to a professional. Try contacting local flooring companies, or check your local registry to see if you have someone in your area that does 'carpet repair, or dye'. If the bleach stains aren't very large, then it might be possible to 'swap' a portion of the carpet out of a closet, and patch it. Again, this isn't something I would recommend for a novice. It does take a bit of skill to make a patch that blends in so it isn't visible. Using carpet dye, or patching a carpet, are two things that can very easily end up with more problems than you started with, hehe. In a worst case scenario, the carpet could be replaced.. so it would be a toss up, as to which would be more expensive, losing the deposit, or installing new carpet. Before replacing it, I'd suggest you double check with the apartment management. Many apartment complexes will keep at least a portion of the deposit, for 'cleaning' anyway, so there is a chance you won't get your full deposit back, even if you leave it with absolutely no damage at all. The only way around it would be to hire a professional cleaning company yourself, and that usually costs more than letting the apartment management have their maintenance/cleaning employees do the work. I would recommend that, if you cannot find someone to repair the carpet, that you get some estimates on replacing it. Then, if the apartment management tries to keep the entire deposit, you make them break it down by cost (in writing). If their cost for carpet replacement is higher than your estimates, you've got something you can use to barter with, if it is worth your time. Good Luck
- Q:I have to clean a carpet that has a red cool aid stain on it? Since it is not my carpet, I have no idea how long the stain has set into the carpet. I am willing to try just about anything short of a beach based cleaner? The carpet is an off white, so it's extremely noticable. Any suggestions, or is this a hopeless case?
- Use any oxygen-cleaner based carpet cleaner, but don't follow the instructions. Instead spritz the stain until the spot is saturated and leave it alone. Repeat this over 2 or 3 days. I've never known it to fail, even with dark stains.

- ok,lets face the facts.home carpet shampooers are only for touch up they don,t deep clean no matter what you try.i use stanly steamer.to do the deep sanitizing and deep cleaning once a year and touch up with my rug doctor shampooer as needed.well worth the money and when you add up the time and cost of trying to do it yourself it is darn near a free bee.check them out.don,t cost to ask.
