Q:My wife and I are putting chair rail in various places of our new home. We have seen a few pictures of rooms in magazines in which the chair rail was quite a bit higher (for instance, about 5 feet up on an 8 foot ceiling) than usual and liked the way it looked. My dad told us that we probably shouldn't do this. Anyone have any opinions?

Most likely what you were seeing was a picture rail ... those tend to be about 2 feet from the ceiling where as a traditional chair rail tends to be be about 2-3 feet from the floor. I think if the higher rail is something you like then its your perogative and go ahead!

Q:Wondering if anyone has any good stories about a chair breaking while they were sitting in it? What kind, what was it made out of? I just recently broke a wooden kitchen chair! I was leaning on the back legs and they broke loose and I crashed into a table behind me and broke a lamp and picture frame! Guess that's why my mom always told me not to lean back on the legs...

I was in one of those little kid plastic ones, it was pink, old, and from Ikea. I was babysitting my niece and we were having a little tea party. I tried to scoot in by jumping with the chair, like that little hop to scoot in. So, the front legs to the chair broke and my head smacked onto the little table, causing me to get a bloody nose, and the little tea pot filled with tea went all over my lap. My niece still likes to bring it up every time i see her saying that i peed cause I was scared but I always tell her it was the tea. I had a bruise for a while and i'm still ashamed of the incident.

Q:Hi!I have a typical desk/office chair and I want to reupholster its seat.It is made of nylon fabric.I would like to know if it is possible to find a store that sales upholstery for desk chairs (And which also has upholstery that will fit my chair properly), and how hard will it be to take off the current upholster and put the new one (Is it possible anyway?)Thanks!

There should be screws underneath holding the seat to the chair. Take them out and the seat will lift off. Measure the size and buy fabric, which by the way Walmart sells heavy grade upholstery fabric. But, buy it where each seat piece will have at least 4 inches overhang on each side. Just lay the seat on the fabric and use a staple gun to staple the new cloth on. (Try to keep the padding that is there now, unless it's worn or too dirty.) When stapling, start in the center of the first side and work out. If there's too much excess fabric, just trim it off. Then re-screw them back on the chair. Voila!

Take apart and reglue with yellow carpenters glue and clamp with band clamps or ratchet straps.

The chairs that I am most familiar with are Pelton Crane, KaVo Dental-EZ. I'm not really sure which brands have the largest market share, but I'm sure that if you contact individual companies, they'll know! If you want to purchase a chair, contact your local dental dealer. If you want to work for a company selling chairs, go to the manufacturer's websites.
