Q:I'm buying a new dining suite, and have got my eye set on a set of nice suede cream chairs. Opinion seems to be divided over whether suede is good or bad, so my question is - are suede chairs good for a dining room? Do they stain easily, even when scotchguarded (and does scotchguard change their feel?).

Q:Was looking around on the net for a business idea add on, already have a successful window cleaning business but was kind of thinking those massage chairs you see in malls and shops might be an easy money earner as an add on business, does anyone operate one currently or have done in the past and think its a waste of money.

I don't think so, back in New York in the malls i have seen at least one and they have always been empty. People walk right by them or just sit in them and don't put money into them. Have you thought of gumball machines?

Look for an office supply site. Try before buy tho' if you can.

Q:I want to remove white paint from my rocking chair and I want it a warm walnut color. What exactly do I have to do? Do I strip it, sand it. What steps do I use?

I would recommend stripping it and then cleaning off the stripper with soap water. Once the wood dries then finish sand the entire chair 180 grit should do fine. At that point depending on the natural color of the wood you could apply a neutral stain followed by a clear coat to protect the stain. If you need to paint to achieve the color then go to Lowe's or Home Depot and find a latex paint that is a suitable color.

Q:I have heavy aluminium chairs around a table on my outdoor patio, see http://www.norths .za/cat6.php?catID=7 My patio floor comprises unglazed tile, and the chairs are hard to pull out to sit on and once seated, to slide toward the table. The ends of the legs are round +- 18mm (3/4 inches). I have tried felt pads - no good - they wear away in days. I have tried hard plastic caps - a little better - but still difficult to move.What can I do to allow the chairs to slide easily.

Nylon chair glides would probably be your best bet. I just tiled our kitchen area and bought these for oak dining room chairs. I don't know if they have them for metal chairs. Check Home Depot or one of the other home improvement stores.

As long as you make them stable - they are great - saves a lot of back ache.

Q:I have some chairs that have cushions down half the back and on the seat. I want to recushion the top and make it wider and the cushion go all the way down to the seat. (Turn them into Parsons chairs) What would be the easiest way to do this?

I would use foam, wledbond, plywood, string, buttons and fabric. First measure the base of your chair at the seat and figure out the hieght you would like the parsons chairs to be. If you chair is 18 wide at the base, and you want them to be 24 high, then you would need your plywood to be 14 x 21 high {approx.}. You can get this cut for a fee {usually} at any lumber or home improvement store. Take the lumber and attach it to the chair with weldbond and clamps {and l have no idea of your chairs but weldbond works on metal and wood} or anything that will hold it tight while it hardens. Let this be glued firmly and completely dry...for extra security you can tie with rope {it will be covered with the foam} . Get some 2 {or more} thick foam and cut it so you have one long strip that is 50 long by 28 wide. Now on the inside seat part of the back of the chair, take a staple gun {or if you have little hands like me, use a nail and hammer} and attach string every four inches or so in a grid layout} Now take the foam and make holes with a knife or sizzors to line up with string. Take your weld-bond and spread it evenly over the plywood {be generous} front and back. Take the foam and lay it beginning on the inside bottom edge, pulling through the string as you apply it to the glued surface, bring it over the top, and then down the back of the chair, you will have excess on the sides and final bottom edge, but this can be trimmed later. leave to dry on the floor lightly tie and hold in place with string. Take fabric and cut to the same size, drape it in the same manner, making holes and pulling through string Attach with upholstorers nails. Tke the string and attach big beautiful funky buttons. They will look fabulous!!!
