Do your cooling fan(s) operate? One of the common problems with these cars, is for the cooling fan resistor to burn out, causing the low speed cooling fan not to work when commanded by the PCM to work. When this happens, the engine will overheat. Regarding the water pump itself, is relatively simple to access. However, the engine mount needs to be removed in order the gain clearance for the pump pulley to be removed, and then the pump itself. Check the green with black striped wire, and the green with red striped wire leading to the resistor first though. It is secured to the cooling fan shroud by a simple plastic lock clip. This part is far simpler to access than the pump. Hope this helps.

I'm sorry to tell you, but from your description it sounds as if you have major internal engine damage. A water pump just won't cause the symptoms you are describing. I'd have to say your engine is close to seizing up entirely - the knocking sounds like rod knock in the bottom end of the motor.

nothing is leaking. you're not even sure, positively that the water pump is the culprit. I learned something last week, that if you spray wd40 on the offending pulley it will silence it. The other pulleys of course will not be affected.

Drain the coolant. Remove fan clutch. Remove radiator shroud. Remove serpentine belt. Disconnect top and bottom radiator hoses. Disconnect bypass and heater hose. Remove the pump bolts. Remove the pump. Clean all old gasket material off block. Reverse to install! Be sure to use anaerobic sealer on the bolts that enter into the water passages. It's a good idea to replace the thermostat at this time, and flush the radiator and block, as well as use new coolant.

Q:I noticed my car was quot;in the redand was about to overheat as i was driving, so at first I thought maybe i needed more coolant. I turned off my car and heard a fan noise under my engine for like a minute then it stopped. I checked the radiator and it was empty (no coolant) so i put water in there to get to the store to buy more coolant. Yes - look for the leak!!!! With the car off, look for stains on the radiator, or puddles of greenish fluid anywhere. If you see puddles, look for the hoses/connections above them. If you see a stain near the water pump mounting on your car, you are likely having a water pump issue (or a hose clamp has worn a hole in one of your hoses mounted to the pump) If you don't see anything, add water to your car, and look for immediate leaks. You should see something. Check under the car for puddling. Turn off the car and immediately check under the hood - many times your coolant will remain pressurized long enough to continue leaking after its shut off for a little while.
