- Q:For example, how many large solar panels would you need to operate a greenhouse with lighting for simulate sun during cloudy weather, a scheduled sprinkle system and other such things?I'm looking for a very in depth answer.
- if you are talking electrical solar panels, they are rated in watts they generate in full sun. usually these panels are used in tandem with batteries, so they charge up during the day and the batteries hold a reserve of power for later use. If you figure 8 hours of useful sunlight per day, then a 40 watt panel will light a 40 watt bulb for 8 hours. you can also measure capacity in watt-hours. this would be 40x8 = 320 watt-hours. the general method is to determine how much electricity demand you have over a 24 hour period to get the total watt-hours. then divide that by the watt-hour capacity of one panel to get the number of panels needed.
- Q:What about sources for straight forward solar powered products? Excluding toys, garden frogs and outdoorpath lights I have found few useful items for the home. What I have found are solar panels for under $00 each, inverters, rechargeable indoor lights and a few camping/RV products that are interesting. - Actually they do make these... u have one but the voltage is no guaranteed as depends on the radiation from sunlight. I have a 8v 60Watt folding solar panel... works great and does charge laptop but not consistent. It works better when you also have an external battery with you as well. - I just got a quote for my place. It came out $8/Watt installed. The quote was for 24 - 20W panels. Dividing the total quoted price by the 24 panels comes out to $,750 per panel. This includes the complete system with the converter and cutoff switch to connect it to the grid. This is also a top-of-the-line system. There are cheaper systems with shorter life spans. My quote was for a system with a 30 year life expectancy. There is a Federal tax credit in 2009 of 30% that will bring the system cost down. There are also nice state tax incentives in CA.

- Because when the sun is down there is no solar energy, therefore they produce zero energy. This can happen any time of the year when the sun has set. But not to worry, they the sun will rise the next day. ;-) If you need constant power, it is best to connect the solar panels to the grid or to batteries to have power throughout the day and night too !
