Q:Can I build my own Hot Water Solar Panels?
I worked for a plumbing service that offered hot water solar panel installs and replacements. I've replaced perfectly good solar panels for people who wanted to upgrade to the latest. We had piles and piles of panels out behind the shop. We use to scrap the copper and sell the glass panes. A few people would ask to scavenge panels and the boss would let them have it cheap, just to move some of the stuff. I would do the same. I'd find a local installer and see what they do with the leftovers. Chances are, if you searched diligently, you could probably find panels in good shape and use them to supplement your energy usage. Bear in mind, solar hot water system are very different from standard systems. They usually have a much larger storage tank. Typically 80-20 gallons compared to 40. They have a circulating pump and temperature sensors to move the heated water from the panel into the tank. These larger hot water heaters/tanks have much better storage and insulation to keep the water temperature that is generated during the day to last into the evening when people are home to use the shower and wash clothes to take advantage of solar heat. It's not just a matter of getting a panel and slapping it up. There's are technical aspects that need to be followed and if you don't know them, I would advise against doing it yourself. Study up on it and see if it's something you want to tackle on your own before you go too far doing legwork to find out details that might be cost prohibitive or too complicated. Good luck.
Q:Efficiency of solar panels?
The panels themselves efficiency are 5 to 8 percent at converting sun energy to electicity currently.But as what you said above,the conversion efficienc is about 70%,so a KW solar panel can produce 3.5KW in 5 hours,The solar panels of China are compared comparably to other contries.The highest efficiency of 24% is rare,they are not widely avaliable.
Q:Maintenance of Solar Panel?
New solar panels are clean and shiny and they look cool. Then they get dirty with dust and debris caught on the wind and residues left behind by rain and birds. Solar panels must be regularly cleaned and maintained in order to keep them operating efficiently and maximize the amount of sunlight they convert into electricity. Unlike windows your solar system needs to have a clean and clear surface to ensure they are working at their maximum efficiency. If they are not at their optimum performance it means they are not producing the amount of electricity that they could be. Solar panels will attract dirt, dust, soot, pollen, tree sap and salt crystals in coastal regions creating a fine layer of grime. This layer reduces the amount of light reaching the silicon cells under the glass surface and reduces the panel's effectiveness. A solar panel that has never been cleaned could be producing almost a third less power than it otherwise could be. Some have reported a ten to fifteen percent loss of solar output due to dirty panels. From the ground the panels may appear to be clean, just like your windows. Up close however you can see the grime that has built up from the dirt and pollution in the air. A more noticeable deposit that can be left on panels is bird droppings. Q:Is using a thick cardboard backing for a solar panel ok?
In commercial panels some sort of polymer is often used for backing. With a 2V panel there are 36 cells, which means they can still output about 4V for charging a 2V battery even when hot. The voltage reduces about 2.2mV per degree C per cell. Commercial panels are meant to work up to about 60 degrees C, which is quite normal in the sun. I have found just lying them on the grass the air circulation is reduced, and they get too hot to charge a 2V battery. This means the backing should have good thermal conductivity while being an electrical insulator, as well as mechanical strength. The cells are often encapsulated in a thermosetting plastic first, then laid face down so a liquid polymer can be poured as backing.. I have removed commercial panels from their frames and re-packaged them to work in a very wet environment. I suppose cardboard would work, but it is unlikely to have good cooling so the expected voltage would be lower. As you intend to only operate indoors I suppose it is unlikely you have full sun most of the time anyway, so there could be less heating and less output current accordingly. I think the cardboard is only useful for a short time, and is not strong enough. Temperature wise it is marginal. The link below uses plywood for the backing. The backing is supposed to provide strength too. A sheet of some sort of plastic or laminate (including melamine laminate as in kitchen bench tops) comes to mind too. The cells are supposed to be bonded to the backing for better thermal conductivity. Use silicon RTV to stick cells to the backing, very thinly.
Q:Solar Panel Charging?
With a 2 volt power source (solar panel, battery charger, vehicle charging system, etc...) you can charge three 2 volt batteries in parallel circuits then switch to a series circuit through a series/parallel switch to get 36 volts output. I've done this with my electric scooter so I can charge it with my pickup through the lighter socket when I'm away from home. It works great! When at home I just leave the switch in the 36 volt position, plug the charger in the wall receptacle and the charger puts out 36 volts. Actually 2 volt lead acid batteries have 2.6 volts when fully charged so the charging source has an output of 3.6 to 4.2 volts to effect a complete charge. In the series circuit the fully charged batteries would put out 37.8 volts so the charger would have an output of 40.8 to 42.6 volts.

You really need a little more infomation about your battery. It should have a recommended range of charging current. You should not exceed that range. Your solar cells must be a higher voltage than the battery, but you should not connect the cells directly to the battery. First, you need a diode in the line to keep the battery from draining into the solar cells when there is no light. Second, you need a resistor to limit the charging current. You have a 3.6v battery. Let's say the charging current is 0.A. Use a 5v solar cell and silicon diode. The diode will drop the cell voltage to 4.3v. The voltage across the resistor will be .7v for .A current, you need a 7-ohm resistor.

It is a system, you can get a small scale panel that can do things like charge cel phones and ipods. The type of system I have installed on my home needs a converter that turns the dc current that is produced by the panels into ac current to run in my home. I don't have a battery system because I'm not off the grid. When I'm generating more electricity than I am using I sell it back to my utility and at night when I'm not gernerating any electricity I buy it back again. Basically my meter runs backwards durning the day and frontwards during the night.

Are you trying to sell it - is that why you're wanting to change the appraised value? Your home is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Before anyone buys it, they'll have their own appraiser make an evaluation. Rarely do you get back upgrades $$$ when you sell. This likely includes solar panels.
