Not a stupid question - it shows you are thinking about your horse's safety. It is possible for a horse to get a foot caught in a rug if he were to lie down and/or roll. If the rug rips right away, he could be ok, but the straps are usually made of nylon and do not give way easily. The potential for injury is actually quite large. However, if you keep the blanket straps tight enough, this should keep the horse from being able to get a foot caught in the straps in the first place. A lot of people leave the straps way too loose. They don't need to be as tight as a girth, but they shouldn't hang down either.

The wood can get a little weak or the tacks themselves may not hold the new carpet in place depending on the type of backing on the new carpet. You may also want to consider removing the old padding simply because of the amount of dirt and liquids that may have been absorbed over the years. When it comes down to it, it's about how much you can budget to the project.

carpet always smells like a wet dog. lol You can rent the rug doctor again but this time when after you shampoo... rinse with vinegar water. this will help remove soap residue and help keep your carpet from picking up more dirt that sticks to soap.

I'm sure you could figure it out, but it would depend on a lot of variables (i.e. total diameter of roll, width of carpet, etc). Would probably be much easier to unroll it in all honesty.

Well, if it is a bunch of dye there isn't much you can do except replace the carpet. The stain is permanent. If the spot isn't too big, you can do a Carpet Transplant: Cut the stain out using a razor knife. Be careful to cut only the carpet, not the padding under it. Cut a piece of replacement carpet from a place no one will ever notice, like from inside a closet. Put the ruined piece on a piece of paper and trace around it. This will be your template. Cut this out and use it as a pattern for the new piece. You want an exact match in shape. Glue the replacement piece of carpet in place using waterproof glue. Attach it to the padding underneath. Or you can sew it into place by sewing it to the existing carpet. (You will need a curved needle if you sew it in place.) The repair should be invisible when you're done. -
