the water pump circulates the coolant through the engine so that the heat is moved from the engine block to the radiator where it is given up to the outside air. the circulation of the coolant is what keeps the engine from overheating. if the engine is overheating you shouldn't drive the car as it could cause the engine to seize if the water pump is 'bad' it won't move the coolant through the engine fast enough and the engine will run hot. That usually doesn't happen. What does happen is that the water pump seals wear out and they leak and the engine won't run for long with all of the coolant leaked out. the bearning in the water pump do get noisy over time and they could get real loud. Typically the worn bearing will cause a seal leak (see above) before the pump seizes. most shops change the water pump when they change the timing belt. On that car I think the timing belt and water pump were to be replaced every 90,000 miles hope that helps

It sounds like you have a leak in the AC system and are low on freon. The low pressure switch is cutting off the compressor to keep the system from freeaing up and damaging the whole system. Firstly follow the water to find the leak. The two problems may not be related. Assuming the radiator you bought was new, here are you possible problems/solutions. Radiator cap is a possibility. This will be apparent if you chase the leak. If you waterpump is begining to fail, you will generally have water coming from a small hole at the base of the snout where the drive pulley is (on most cars). The only way a hose can affect the ability of the cooling system to function is if the lower hose collapses when running. Check to see that this is not happening. If it is, replace the hose and make sure that the new hose has the wire coil inside to prevent this from happening. You may also have a thermostat problem. If the thermostat does not open, you will definately overheat. You cannot always check it with this method, but a good indicator is to feel the upper radiator hose before and after starting the engine (when warmed up). Before starting the engine, the hose should be fairly flexible and easy to squeeze. After starting, and being warmed up, it should get fairly stiff due to the flow going through the hose. Don't forget that the hose will be over 200 degrees, so be careful.

More than likely your water pump was about to go. If it has or had more than 50,000 miles on it, I wouldn't be suspicious of anything. Usually, the timing belt is right in there with the water pump and it is the most critical belt of them all. When you take your car back have them inspect it. A snapped timing belt can ruin your engine.

Positive displacement means that the water is pushed by some sort of piston. Diaphragm pumps are positive displacement and useful if you don't want the water to run back. Also you won't need to prime it because won't drop the water out when it stops. I'm not sure where hydraulic ram type pumps come into this scheme but they rely on the inertia of moving water to generate high pressure pulses to pump water.
