- Q:I have a few ceramic tiles on my kitchen backs plash that do not match my new kitchen color. Can I paint them? If so, how? Thank you.
- You can paint anything. How long it will stick is another matter. Ask at a paint store and tell them what you are painting. You must clean the tile clean first.
- Q:currently have vinyl tile glued to concrete on grade. Want to install bamboo floor / engineered wood. Can we go on top of existing vinyl?
- Possibly. The vinyl tile must be well installed (not coming loose or bubbling or open seams, etc.). If the vinyl tile is a no wax or smooth surface, it may still need to be prepped with a palm sander and 80 grit just enough to give it some tooth. And finally, make certain to contact both manufacturers' reps or technical services to make certain that the new glue is compatible with both the vinyl and the bamboo... and to make certain that this endeavor will not void your warranty. - Q:i will be laying tiles o my bathroom floor and i am wondering if HomeDepot or Lowes do the tile cutting. i dont want to purchase the wet saw. i will need to cut tiles for corners and things like that. Thanks.
- Yeah, some of them do. Just go back to the tile section and ask. I know my local Lowe's does. They charge per tile I think. I personally recommend renting a wetsaw or buying a cheap wetsaw. You can buy one for about $50-75 if you buy a cheap one. The reason why I say that is because trying to get the cuts right when you are running back and forth isn't the easiest to do, especially if you have a lot of tiles to cut. There were many times when I did tiling in my kitchen that I needed to adjust how I cut the piece. For the cheap ones, I'd recommend buying a cheap large Rubbermaid container that isn't real tall to set the wetsaw in. It makes cleaning up a lot easier. If you have only a very few tiles to cut, then it might be better to have Lowe's or Home Depot cut them. The manual tile cutters work ok as long as you don't have to work on small tiles or very thick tiles. For my kitchen I had small thick tiles, so using a manual tile cutter didn't make sense. Manual tile cutters don't really cut the tile. They score the tile then break it. That's why thick small tiles work poorly on them. Manual tile cutters tend to work better for large or thin tiles like floor tiles or bathroom wall tiles like porcelain tiles. If the floor tiles are large floor tiles the manual tile cutter/breaker would be your best/cheapest option.
- Q:I just finished grouting my tile yesterday I want to remove the haze with vinager should I let the grout cure for three days,then seal it and then scrub the whole floor including going over the grout lines (which would be then sealed) scrubbing with a sponge and avoiding the non cured grout is working but is taking far too long
- Clear water should work. You're supposed to get all that off before you leave it to dry. Do seal it after the curing process. Even dark grouts get dirty. Sealing helps a lot.
- Q:We have a fireplace in our lower level that is outdated, dingy old masonry and doesn‘t fit with the rest of our updates down there. I would like to tile over it and have it ready for use before our family comes over for Thanksgiving. What is the best method?
- You can attach tile directly to masonry, it has been done all over the world for centuries (Italy, Spain, Middle East all use tile on the exterior of buildings...) I would assume normal thin-set mortar would work, but I believe it would depend on the exact type of masonry- concrete block or clay brick. A thicker adhesive bed will likely be necessary to smooth over the rough surface, but because of the relatively porous surface of most types of masonry your bond should be excellent. My only word of caution would be if you have any cracks in the masonry. Make sure they are not active (widening and narrowing), which may occur with temperature and humidity swings. Either way, you may choose to weld the crack with epoxy to prevent any crack movements that may telegraph through your tile and crack it. - Q:I am doing a research project at school on erosion, and one of the members on my research team said something about underground tiles that run water into the nearest body of water. We have been trying to locate a source, or ANY piece of information on this subject, but have failed. Is there anyone who can help us?
- These aren't erosion tiles, they are drainage tiles. Do a web search on tile drainage and you'll find out all you need to know about the subject. BTW, tiles and tile lines are just underground pipes with holes in them, used to lower shallow water tables. It wasn't clear to me that you understood this, so sorry if I'm pointing out the obvious.

- In some measure it depends on how strong you want the tiles to be. Fired clay, in even a tile sense, is usually done at 3600 degrees in a kiln. Then cooled, painted/glazed/ etc. and fired again. At a decent pottery retailer you can find dozens of types of clay, and in fact some that is low fire, or even oven bake, which can be hand painted, and perhaps glazed over with a clear coat and no re-firing, but the strength and durability issue will still exist. Clay for tile, Ceramic or Porcelain, is slab rolled for consistency, Cut precisely, fired in kilns, cooled, then is decorated variously. Some larger houses will sell blanks that one can decorate themselves, even coffee mugs/cups/ bathroom sinks. etc. Obviously with a rolling pin and some risers, at 3/8 or 1/4, you could hand roll the clay and cut it, but then what? Below is a link for a general search to a company that can give you all the info you need in various methods and types of clay used. I spent a lot of $$$ with them in the early part of this decade. - Wash your tiles first - then use BIN primer (it will adhere to your tiles). Then paint with the paint of your choice. BIN is a primer.
- Q:Anyone have any experience with using glass mosaic tile as the kitchen counter material (not just as the backsplash)? This would be for a lightly used area of my kitchen counter by the sink - not the primary work area. Would love to hear any pros and cons. Thanks!
- I just have to say this. I'm in the tile business and sell glass tiles on a daily basis. I might reccomend them for a light duty bathroom counter,but I most certainly woul NOT reccommend them for Kitchen counter use. They will withstand the heat just fine,that isnt the problem. They WILL scratch and the grout maintenance involved (even if sealed) would be horrendous. Save them for the backsplash use. Good Luck. Ballzie
- Q:I want to put ceramic tile in my dining room, my room is 12' x 11'. So how would I go about deciding how many tiles I would need? The tiles are 12x12. But for ceramic tiles dont you have to leave space in between them?
- First measure the room from wall to wall.Length and width.Multiply the numbers.This gives you square footage.Add another 15 square feet for cutting and breakage.Tiles are sold per square foot not amount.Space in between does not matter in calculation.This is up to you.If you want a more full look make space smaller.This is easier for maintenance(cleaning).1/4 inch is normal, 3/8 is big.The bigger the space it's harder to grout plus will cost more in grout.Make sure to use grout similar colour to tile.If your floor is wood underneath then you have to fasten it so it does not vibrate and then lay a wire mesh before putting on the tile.This is important,if you do not do this the tiles will crack.To remove them costs more than putting them on.
