in most cases you can do the repair in your truck or car by removing the oil pan. but if you are gonna check them you might as well replace them . check for shaving in your oil pan . might be an indication of failing bearings

The ABEC scale isn't very accurate for measuring how fast a board can go, hopefully we will one day get a scale that is accurate. You're Bone Swiss bearings probably do go faster, when you're riding your board, challenge him to a race, either you'll win or you got ripped off.

Q:Im just wondering how important it is to clean and regrease a cars wheel bearing. Working as a bicycle mechanic, this is something I do on a daily basis to every other bike we work on. And so Ive always wondered why I dont hear about wheel bearing going out on cars, or why I dont hear about having them serviced...Im assuming they are sealed bearings, but still it seems like they should need serviced every so often. I drive an early 90s ford truck, nothing fancy. Is this something I should consider doing, or should I not worry about it unless they start making noise?Thanks!

First, check to see if your upper and lower wheel bearings have zerx fittings. If they do not, you cannot service them. Whenever your tires are rotated or serviced have the mechanic check them. He will try to shake the tire by grabbing it on the top and bottom and attempting to move them. If there is play, you need to replace your lower wheel bearings and upper control arms - both sides. If you have zerx fittings, then every oil change the mechanic should grease them. He/She will only put in enough grease to make it come out the boot which replaces worn out grease. No one else in this forum appears to have any idea how to maintenance a car/truck. Also, from the factory most new 4WD trucks do not have zerx as they are planning on their parts wearing out and needing replacement. Upon replacement I recommend a heavier duty ball joint / control arm replacement that is greasable. I just did this to my 07 Silverado 1500 at 125K miles. I live in the country and traverse dirt roads frequently. My indicator that this was needed was tire wear on the inside of my front tires and vibration when driving on the highway. hay go to advance auto and set up an account then you can put your vehicle in well i mean there web site and add ur car then you can go into what they call your garage once ur in there there you select shops near you via zip find the closet or one u like,then you can go into a little program they have called cost estimater well something like that,the data base will use and calculate labor according to your area location like were i live the average labor cahrge is 85.00 per if youu dont what to take time to do it give me ur vehicle specs and ill run it for you,ive done wheel bearings before hold on i see u have imfo up there sorry ill go and check it for uare they the wheel hub assembly or do you have to press them in if its the assembly you and a buddy can do it it be a shot saturday ok ill be back with estimate ,it wont be 100% acurate depending on labor cost in ur woods ok i checked for some resone they didnt have bearing listed in the estimater but they do have a step by step estimated time per side 1 hour so u figure labor wood at 85.00 an hour or what ever 170.00 labor but i checked it is the hub assebly they are pretty easy take ur time and theres vids on youtube search 1a auto hope i was a help good luck i check my 2000 pontiac sunfire it didnt have hub assembly in esatamator ,ran my 03 s10 it was listed cost was175.00 labor have a good 1

Q:I have Bones Reds skateboard bearings and usually just spray WD40 on/in/around them and spin them a little and then spray again and let it dry before putting them back into my wheels and then spraying them again with WD40. Is there a proper way to deep clean/lube them? Also, any instructions on how to remove the shields (because its only one-sided red). Thanks!

I actually just lubed my bearings yesterdday. Don't use Wd-40 it may seem better but it attracts more dirt than it would normally. Since you have Bones get Bones Speed Cream RF. Bones also make cleaning easy for there is only one shield that needs to be taken off which is the red shield. To take them of just get a thumb tack and go in the gap between the metal and the shield and put it in and pry it off. It will then snap back in after cleaning. Also when you buy Speed Cream it gives you all the instructions.

Q:i bought some new bearings today, Bones Reds. the guy at the shop said that they were so fast they didn't need an abec. after riding i thought that my old bearings, the rush abec-7's, went faster. i just wanted to know which is faster

There is no way for someone to give you an answer to your question without testing both bearings on expensive equipment with specific loading. If the Rush bearings work better for you, buy them in the future. However both the shop guy and jibiking are full of nonsense about ABEC and also partly right. ABEC is a tolerance specification for how gaps inside the bearing and how much it can wobble when it spins. It has nothing to do with how easily a bearing spins. ABEC got used for skate bearings because companies were using Precision grade bearings which are garbage. ABEC 1 rated bearings were a vast improvement over the Precision grade. Bearing sellers then decided if 1 is good, larger numbers can be advertised as better. A few of the better bearing companies (Twin Cam, Zero Drag, Bones) have designs that are better for skating by not meeting the specifications of the ABEC ratings..

Q:My two front wheels on my skateboard randomly lock up. You know how you're suppose to leave a little wiggle room when you tighten the nut? Well after a few minutes of skating the wiggle room is gone and it's like I tightened down my bolt all the way. There's nothing wrong with my nut and my bearings are bones swiss and my wheels are bones stf 54mm. This is so strange. I've even rotated the wheels and bearings out from back to front and once again it's my front two wheels. It's beyond me. Please help!

If you aren't using speed ring, use them. Replace axle nuts. Could be bearing migration from excess bearing lube. Remove bearings and wipe outer race with denatured alcohol. Wash the wheels with dish soap and water. Make sure to wash the bearing seats. Dry before placing the bearings back in. If it happens only on one side but not the other, it's axle slip. Send trucks back to manufacturer.

Honestly... unless you have very good bearings, the best thing youc an do is toss them and get a new set. Most bearings are inexpensive and rather cheaply made. If you are using something like bones swiss, then take care of them and they can last for years. What do I use to clear my swisses? Gasoline. Its dangerous, but nothing works better. Honestly, just get a new set if you are riding cheap bearings.
