Q:What is the best size tiles for bathroom?
As answer 1 states and you already have priced, 12x12 is fine. Even in a small room the larger tile creates an illusion of larger space. The issue for the floor will be cutting, also as answer 1 states, but divisible is not as much the issue as how you square the room and where you set the center, allowing the most number of full pieces visible as possible. That's not only for aesthetics, but determining cuts and where the cut pieces will be least visible. If you have cove base molding you can assume 1/4 inch from the molding as the final grout line and throughout 1/4 inch is usual. What that does however, in your measuring is to add/subtract 1 inch for every 4 pieces of 12 x 12 tile. IE: If you think to tile in a 4 ft. wide area you will have to cut the tile at least on one side of that, allowing for the grout lines. Addressing wall tile size. I tiled my shower walls in a 16x 16 terra cotta but I don't advise it. The usual would be 4x4 or 6x6, in that size range. It's not impossible to use large tile but is more a challenge. You should use a rapid set mortar/mastic, still use spacers, even at 1/8 inch and set the lower course first, allow to dry/set 24 hours, then build your way up the wall. In my case with the size and weight I had to brace each tile to hold it in place. Given that these are rentals, I'd make the job as easy as possible, probably with smaller wall tiles, even mesh backed. In any case a poly blend mortar/quick set and the same in a sanded grout DOC
Q:Just replaced some 3/4 Ply in bathroom. Can I tile right on top of that or do I need an underlayment?
Ceramic tile or vinyl tile? Ceramic tile you need a total substrate of no lees than 1 1/4. This means you need to add a minimum or 1/2 to make it sturdy enough for tile . And the very best ting to use ( for the average DIY) is 1/2 cement board. And this needs to be properly installed. This will comply to ATC and TCA tile codes.. If your using a vinyl tile you possible can go over it all w/o underlayment but I strongly suggest a 1/4 wood underlayment such as luan. This gives you a clean surface to bond to. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q:major issue replacing bathroom tile?
It wont raise the floor, jus fix your tiles with a good tile adhesive . dont go for cement.
Q:What is the use of ceramic tile?
Use: the construction of the wall to be wet (outside the wet dry), and to maintain a certain degree of flatness, uneven or extremely rough parts of the application of cement mortar and other materials leveling; grass-roots must remove the floating ash, oil, wax, so as not to affect the stick Knot tiles in 5 to 15 minutes after the move can be corrected. Water-cement ratio of about 1: 4, after mixing the binder should be used within 5 to 6 hours (the temperature is about 20 degrees); the mixed adhesive applied to the back of the adhesive brick, and then Press hard, until the plain so far. Due to different materials and the actual consumption of different, generally at least about 4.5 to 6 kg per square meter, paste thickness of about 2 ~ 3mm. Use of common sense: 1, deacetal type: vulcanization speed, transparency is good, but in the curing process Release of acetic acid; with a pungent odor, but also on the metal, coated glass and some inorganic materials corrosion.
Q:I am planning on tiling a shower..?
If okorder.com/... If you haven't done tile before, then you may want to hire someone. Even through Schluter's Kerdi system makes the shower a lot easier, I wouldn't recommend that you take on this project without a bit experience with tile. A shower even with this simple system is one of the hardest tile projects there is. But if you have tiled backsplashes or tub surrounds then get the CD-ROM or video, and study it, and go for it. My suggestion is make sure you run the tile plumb and level, get that Kerdi-Mat flat and well bonded, you are going to have to float the curb (the mat when lapped itself, builds up a ridge, you'll see) so use a straight edge. Use a mosaic two inch for the floor. Caulk the inside corners. A simpler thing would be to get a fiberglass pan, and just tile the walls. You still need to waterproof the walls with Kerdi-Mat or a combination of concrete board over tar-paper. An excellent book is Setting Tile by Micheal Bryne. It will show more details than a describe here. Good Luck
Q:What kind of paint will stick to tile?
Paint for glass, but it will not be really permanent. Stick, yes.
Q:What size tile would work and look best?
I okorder.com, All of these websites will have great suggestions on pattern.
Q:Sealing Porcelin Tile?
Porcelain tile is not porous so sealing is not recommended and can make it slippery like a sheet of ice...You can seal the grout in between though.
Q:installing tiles for floor slab?
If you're using ceramic tiles (very regular size and relatively smooth/even back), use a 1/4 square notched trowel, held somewhere between 45 and 90 degrees (vertical). If you're using natural stone tiles (e.g. granite, marble, slate), go for 3/8 square notched trowel and back-butter the tiles. Make sure the concrete slab is clean, sound, free of cracks and level before you start and follow the instructions for your thinset. You'll likely want to use a modified thinset which will help bond to the concrete better. If you have any doubts about the stability of your slab, consider installing an isolation membrane between the tile and slab. Schluter's Ditra system is the best of the breed for this. If you use an isolation membrane, use unmodified thinset (instead of modified).
Q:How long are ordinary white strip tiles?
General use of external walls, specifications 5CMx25CM
