500 kva is a big generator and I am guessing it is diesel. It is safe to run at 10% load however it is not good for the engine itself to make a practice of that. It can lead to lower cylinder temperatures and incomplete combustion over time. It is always better to run at or as close to max load as you can.
Q:If you obtained all of your energy from a diesel generator, how much diesel would you save per year by switching from incandescent to CFL? Diesel has an energy density of 36 MJ/L and your generator operates with 40% efficiency. Incandescent bulbs consume 60-100W, while CFL consumes 15-25W.
1 Kwh 3.6 MJ. If you use each light 4 hours per day, and each was 100 watts, that is 4 x 100 x 10 x 365 1,460,000 watt hours per year. That requires 1,460 x 3.6 MJ 5,256 MJ. / 0.4 efficiency 13,140 MJ. So you need 13,140 / 36MJ/L 365 Liters of diesel. If you used CFLs, at 25 watts, the answer is 1/4 of that, so 365 / 4 91.25 Liters of diesel. So the savings is 365 - 91.25 273.75 Liters savings. At $1.25 per liter, that is $324.19.
Q:I am planning to buy a 20 KVA Diesel Generator. Both the vendors are confusing me over Air cooled and Liquid cooled engines. Can anyone help me to understand the pros and cons of the said engines for a commercial requirement.
At 20 KVA I'm thinking the air cooled set is using a Deutz, Want some advice? Avoid it like the plague! First off there noisy, and if you don't like replacing timing belts and head gaskets these are not the engines for you, As a heavy diesel equipment mechanic I seriously hate these engines, Lucky for me the outfit I work for now wont buy any piece of equipment equipped with a Deutz engine, So do yourself a favor and find a Genset with a Kubota or Isuzu in it, there not dumb enough to use an air cooled design, actually just buy a Multiquip and save yourself the headaches and repair bills.

It's difficult to guess at exact ratings based solely on a picture. Check the generator housing for its specification plate. You can sometimes ballpark a rating based on the engine size. For each horsepower the system should be capable of producing approximately 500 watts. A 8HP engine is usually connected to a 4000 watt generator, 10HP for 5000W, 14HP for 7000W, etc. Many generators have two coils to supply AC output. For 120VAC output only the two coils are placed in parallel. For 120/240VAC the coils are wired in series and mid connection becomes the neutral. If the generator is presently capable of supplying 1kW, changing the output to supply 240VAC will still supply a maximum of 1kW. The maximum each output coil will supply at 120VAC is 500W. You need to separate the two output coils and wire them in series. Install a proper 240VAC outlet on the generator. The circuit breaker should be reduced to half of its present current rating. Q:I have been researching EV cars and conversions and am wondering about using a generator instead of batteries. I am not an enviro-nut concerned about making an emission free vehicle, just one that is cheap to drive. It seems to me that using a generator to power the motor, although it would use gas, would be way more efficient than a normal gas engine that is in a car, and would be lighter than batteries. You would be losing efficiency each time you transferred energy. Let's say a generator is 50% efficient (that is, half the energy contained in the fuel is transferred), then the electric motor is 50% efficient. Now you are already only getting 25% efficiency from the fuel. You lose efficiency because of various factors including friction and resistance. If you could get 100% efficiency, then you have just invented perpetual motion.

Q:Hello, I am putting an HHO generator, which is metal plates in water in pvc pipe, into my small pickup truck. I am having a bit of trouble finding an EFIE unit though, which is the boy that goes in line in front of the 02 sensor, to give it a bit more juice and stop it from dumping more gas in when it thinks there is not enough air (but way too much HHO) in the system.Are there any automotive forums that you all would direct me to? And if not, are there any manufacturers of finished EFIE units, or even kits to build them, on the internet or elsewhere for me to utilize?I want to get this done before I leave for college. Gas prices suck!
The HHO generator is a scam. First of all, that little generator is not going to make enough hydrogen, efficiently enough to help your fuel economy. Second, hydrogen does not help your fuel economy. Hydrogen gas burns very differently than gasoline or diesel vapors. If you were going to try to run your internal combustion engine on hydrogen, you would have to modify it so much with such an unsatisfactory result that you'd be better off buying a purpose built hydrogen combustion engine. All the companies that sell the HHO generators only sell plans. There are no kits that I know of avaliable for purchase. In fact, this is one of the biggest clues that HHO is a scam. They only sell plans, that way if it doesn't work for you, they can always claim you made a mistake and that's why it doesn't work. Besides, you'll void your warrenty.
