- Q:I have a 1997 Honda Civic DX and i recently took it in to have its timing belt and water pump replaced. Since then, I have noticed a change in the cars performance. I have lost both gas mileage and power since i took my car in. The maintenance supposedly took the dealer twelve hours to complete which seemed a little odd to me. Do you think this is linked? - It sounds fishy for sure. These repairs should not take so much time and if the timing belt is not synched correctly it can affect mileage. I suggest a second opinion by a pro.

- The timing belt drives the water pump in your car. To replace the water pump, you have to remove the timing belt. When you are having the timing belt replaced, it makes sense to also replace the water pump. There is very little additional labor to do so, as the timing belt is already removed. You do not have to do so, but if you do not, and the water pump subsequently fails, you will be paying the full labor charge to replace it rather than just the cost of the part. As to the belt tensioner, I would replace that because it is a wear item, and if it fails it can cause a timing belt failure. If you are going to risk the timing belt failing (and causing major damage to the engine) you might as well not have the belt replaced. I would never replace a timing belt without also replacing the water pump and tensioner. It is false economy to do so.

- The water pump may be leaking causing the coolant loss. But it is certainly not leaking into the engine. You may have misunderstood the mechanic's explanation of the problem. Where is the white smoke coming from? The engine compartment? Then the water pump may actually be leaking coolant into the engine compartment and onto the exhaust manifold. If the white smoke is coming out the exhaust, it's not your water pump. Car repairs are more expensive today because they are more complex and shops prey on the lack of knowledge that car owner's have about their cars. You wil be charged for the VALUE of the repair, not the actual COST (plus a reasonable profit) of repair. You'll pay about 2x-3x the retail price of the water pump than you would have paid if you bought the water pump yourself. Without that water pump, your car is junk. My daughter paid $700+ to have a $149 alternator replaced.

- water on the belt will cause it to slip and squeak or squeal if the water pump is failing the it woukd be overheating all the time and or leaking water and or be noisy due to bearings failing
