Q:My husband and I just moved into yet another rental. The carpet is decent; it's a little stained, but VERY worn in high traffic areas. We have tried everything from having them professionally cleaned to cleaning each inch with a toothbrush (a trick my local flooring salesman gave to make the carpet fibers separate and puff back up). I'm really at the end of my rope here....I just want a nice, clean apartment that I can be proud to show off.: Area rugs are your ONLY choice. I am a landlord and in the few carpeted units I have (most of mine have ceramic tile floors), I also will not let tenants mess with the carpets...if they do, I'll take it out of their deposit when they move out. Your furniture is not the cause of your carpets scrunching up, YOU are. When you walk or move around, the carpet beneath is moved and because the top carpet is not anchored to it, it shifts around. Try a small area rug in a high traffic area...get some velcro strips, the hook side, and using some fabric glue, glue the strips to the back of the area rug...make sure you put a big patch in the middle. Now put the rug down so that the velcro hooks grab the carpet beneath. Now, let it stay there for a few days and see if there is any scrunching...if there is, add some more velcro to the underside of the rug OPPOSITE the scrunch, because the carpet is moving from that direction. If you can make this work on a small rug, you should be able to make it work on larger ones. I have used it in rentals to fix a mat to the carpet just inside the door to minimize soil.. ed fine.

If your stain disappears and comes back again, your carpet is a victim of wicking. (Wicking is when liquid that has pooled around the bottom of a carpet works it's way back up the fibers to the top.) To prevent this, cover the stain with a thick towel and weigh down with a heavy object such as a book or a brick..:)

Q:How can I remove wax from may carpet?: The trick is to use an iron on a medium to low setting. If it is a lot of wax, use an old towel instead of a paper sack so it doesn't spread over a larger area of carpet. Be especially careful if it is colored wax.

We've had young labs, old labs, hardwood, carpet and laminate. Right now, we're on carpet, and wishing we would have stayed with hardwood and area rugs. As someone mentioned, the pee smell is almost impossible to remove from carpeting. You can use relaitively inexpensive area rugs which are easy to clean or replace. Your dog will probably have his/her accidents on the area rugs simply because of they provide traction while the dog is trying to go. The plastic laminates are very tough, and don't dent or scratch from the dog's nails like wood can, but most are less water resistant than wood, and are damaged by moisture more than wood. It's all really personal preference for which product weakness you want to put up with.

Q:Iam looking for others that can help and inspire a begninng rug hooker. I just completed my first project using burlap and wool yarn. I cannot find the same burlap or yarn in the area so would love to find some via internet or the SC/GA area. Walmart carries a very flismy burlap which I do not like, and acrylic yarns which split: Try a mixture of white vinegar and water- 3 to 1 with the water first. Blot and use a towel to dry-Repeat several times. This worked on my wool Persian rug.
